CATHEDRAL ROBBED
CROWNS & DIAMOND EARRINGS LONDON, August 3. Thieves hid in tlie Ferrara Cathedral, in Northern Italy, and stole valuable jewels. The jewels and vdtive offerings in the cathedral are valued at £1,000,000, but the thieves failed tb break the heavy bronze dodrs of the treasure-house adjoinihg the sanctuary. They took, liowever, two jewelled crowns and some diamond earrings of considerable value. The theft was discovered only when the officiating priests unveiled an image after a service. Seeing the results of the theft, the priests hastily closed the' curtain before the worshippers had noticed the loss.
SACRILEGE AT NEWCASTLE
NEWCASTLE, August 4.
A gold chalice and a gold-plated ciborium, valued in all at £6O, were stolen from the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church at Hamilton during the night. It is 4 believed that the thieves hid themselves in the church before it was locked up for the night at 7 o’clock. The sacred vessels were kept in a safe in the sacristy. .The keys to the safe, left in a drawer in the sacristy, were found in the lock of the empty safe this morning.
