SHOTOVER GOLD STRIKE
A VISITOR’S REPORT. [per press association.] DUNEDIN, July 26. A Dunedin, man who has just returned from the Shotover’ River, states that there are six merhbers in the syndicate which has struck rich gold on the Shotover. The leader is Mr Ned. Oxenbridge, who, with his son and other members of his fanlily, has worked the Shotover claim for 10 years. The claim is eight miles from Queenstown, in very rough country. The estimate of 5000 ounces is based on a return of 20 ounces weekly which the paddock has yielded during the past four weeks. The successful lengthy mining of the claim depends on the vagaries of the river, which is noted for its sudden rises. At present the syndicate’s wing dams are two feet above the water level, but a rapid thaw in the back country would cause the suspension of operations.
The visitor states that there is no surface gold there for the amateur miner. Some years ago the same syndicate obtained £25,000 less than a mile below the present claim, and most of this was expended in ma.cliiriery and gear. r/ -
