' [OUR OWN ■ CORRESPONDENT.] A consignment of 90,000 quinnat salmon ova arrived yesterday from the Tlakataramea Salmon Station, and were sent to the hatchery at Lake Kanicri. This makes up a total of 300.000 ova granted to the Westland Society,for the season. After hatching, I. is intended to . release the male- portion of the fry in the South Westland streams and lakes, in the fui.her effort to establish the salmon' in the 'West Coast streams. < All Saints’ Young .Men’s Club held 1 a meeting last evening, the Rev. H. J. W. Knights being in the chair. Among the formal business was the arranging of a social, when the Girl’s Club and the Holy Trinity - Club of Greymouth, will be the guests-. A debate on the question, “That the railway be extended to South Westland,” Mr Lester Leslie led for the affirmative and Mr Ed. Keenan for the negative. On making his award, the judge placed the affirmative first for diction and the negative first for weight of argument. - ■ •
At the Borough Council meeting last evening in dealing with an application for access to a section the Mayor pointed ouj the absurdity of persons taking up sections,- because they are cheap in some unformed street, and expecting the Council to give" access, lay on’water,' erect lighting etc., when there are many sections available which are more accessible. In- approving of the Hospital Board levy at the Council meeting last night, the Mayor said they should be thankful thAt the levy was not greater, and he paid a tribute to the Hospital Board for the economies practised which allowed them to carry on in these times. The levy on the Borough is £776/15/-, which is an increase of £25 on last year’s. The Westland County levy is £1636/19/-, the Kumara Borough £47/12/1, and Ross £39/4/1.
