FASCIST SPORT DISCIPLINE

DAVIS CUP PLAYER SUSPENDED It is announced in Milan that the Italian Federation have suspended P. Gaslini, one of their Davis Cup players, for the next six months. Gaslini, it is alleged, has failed to carry out the .rigid instructions of the Italian governing body in regard to training for forthcoming international matches. Placido Gaslini, the leading player in Genoa, is well known, having been a member of the Italian team which defeated England at Felixstowe in 1928. He played for Italy in the Davis Cup inter-zone match against America at Aiiteuil in 1930, and last year won the national doubles and mixed doubles championship of his country.

Mild-mannered and always sporting on the court, Gaslini’s disagreement with his association is a matter for surprise. One may assume, however, that his temporary suspension is another illustration of' the Fascist regime—a discipline which in the last year or two has embraced Italian sport as well as other activities. During the recent Riviera season G. de Stefani, ranked No. 1 in Italy, was ordered to retire from the final of a Cannes tournament and to return to Italy to train younger players. De Stefani was paired with the -King of -Sweden in the handicap doubles, and a telegram asking that he should -be allowed to remain for another day was sent to Romo. The request, however, was refused, and De Stefani was compelled to “let down” his two partners.
