SIR OLIVER LODGE

REMARKS ON SCEPTICS. LONDON, April 22. In recognition of his distinguished services towards the advancement of science, th© Faraday Medal was presented to Sir Oliver Lodge at the Institution of Electrical Engineers last night. “I suppose this is the last medal I am likely to receive,” said Sir Oliver, as he accepted the award. He said he and the institution had practically grown up together. “I remember hearing Graham Bell come over with the first telephone and describe it,” he said. “I remember the enthusiasm and scepticism it aroused, for there were sceptics in those days about the telephone. “But then there are sceptics about everything. (Laughter). The word sceptic properly means ono who looks into a thing, and I have no objection to that kind of scepticism.”
