The King has knighted Alfred Gilbert, a 78-year-old sculptor, the designer of the famous “Eros” statue in Pdccadily Circus. ■ Last week he accepted an invitation to rejoin the Royal Academy, from which he resigned 23 years ago, as the result of a controversy over a statue of his. He lived in Belgium for 17 years. He returned to London at the invitation of the King to complete a memorial to the Duke of Clarence at Windsor. He then began work on the Queen Alexandra Memorial, which was unveiled by the King at Marlborough House yesterday.
