BOXING
GREYMOUTH ASSOCIATION. Present at a meeting of the Grey- ■ mouth Boxing Association last evening were Messrs A. Beban (chairman), F. H. Denton, J- Steel, W. Kells, L. McGlashan, Kim Williams, P- Betts, W. Gieseking, F. Costello, and F. WBaillie (secretary). It was resolved that a letter ot thanks be forwarded to Messrs F. Bell and A. H. Wilde, fo rtheir efforts in arranging the advertising for the recent professional tournament. Reporting on the Johns-Leckie fight at Hokitika, Mr Williams stated that the match had been well conducted, and a good bout had resulted. The balance-sheet of the JohnsLeckie fight at Hokitika showed that the receipts had amounted to £63 9/10; and that Johns had received £l7 10/8 and Lechie £l4/7/-; In commenting on this, Mr McGlashan added that the net “house” at Greymouth had amounted to £122. Both boxers had expressed themselves as being quite satisfied with the arrangements, and the result of their Gfeymouth fight. In particular, they mentioned that they were thoroughly satisfied with the amount of the. expenses incurred by the Association for the bout, these being the smallest they had ever known. They had never before fought in a.hall costing such a small amount, the charge being usually between £2O and £25. Johns had received £4O 17/- as his share of the proceeds, and Leckie had received £'£ll The Association had made a profit of £l7 odd. A letter was received from Artie Hughes, asking that the Association consider him when next arranging a professional bout. He particularly desired to meet Johns, and would welcome a fight for the Lightweight title, at present held by J,ohns. Mr McGlashan mentioned that Johns was still in Greymouth, and it was. his intention to reside here permanently, if he could obtain employmentIt was resolved that it be a recommendation to the Match Committee to arrange a fight with Johns and Hughes, to take place at Greymouth on May 7.
CROFT AND McEWEN.
There is a possibility that the Greymouth Boxing Association will be asked to stage a fight between Tom Croft, of Greymouth, and George McEwen, of Invercargill. McEwen is seeking J o meet Croft at Greymouth, and the match should prove an attraction, especially in view of the fact that McEwen recently defeated Bert Lowe at Dunedin. SCHMELLING V. SHARKEY. (Received April 12, 1 p.m.) NEW YORK, April 11. The Madison Square Garden Corporation announced to-day that construction work will begin at once on a new half million dollar bowl-shaped stadium at Long Island City, fifteen' minutes from the Broadway Stadium, to be completed in time to furnish a site for the Sharkey v. Schmelling title fight on June 16.
The announcement came as a surprise as it has been expected that the fight would be held at the Yankee Stadium or the polo grounds. The plans call for a seating capacity of between seventy and eighty thousand.
