FRENCH TARIFFS

INCREASE ON BRITISH GOODS. [BY OABLX—PBXSB ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] PARIS, November 14. A French Government decree announces a 15 per cent, surtax against English and Australian imports; and a 7 per cent, tax against Indian imports. The Government’s action is the result of the Empire’s countries’ depreciated currencies. , There are exemptions, which include the goods that have hitherto been exempted from duty, also goods for which a world market exists, and the market price for which is not influenced by the variations in the national currencies, also goods shipped, or bonded, before November 12.

France has thus anticipated a British tariff with a bargaining weapon. LATER.

The Official Journal, in which the decree is published, declares that the surtaxes must not be regarded as increases in duties disguised. They only compensate for the effects of the depreciation in certain currencies, whose devalorisation has imposed on us the obligation of applying surtaxes.
