SLANDER DAMAGES

BOROUGH ENGINEER SUED. AUCKLAND, November 11. A verdict for plaintiff, who was awarded £3OO damages, was given by the jury yesterday in a case in which Forbes Eadie, of Mount Albert, claimed £5OO from Wilfred E. Begbie, engineer of the Mount Albert Borough Council, for damages for slander. Plaintiff alleged that defendant declared that when Eadie was clerk of works in charge of a council contract, he had sold a quantity of soil to a ratepayer, for which he had received a cheque and the money had not been paid to the council. It was further alleged that Begbie said that plaintiff had stolen a shrub from a property in Asquith Avenue.
