WARNING TO DISTRICT. [PEB PRESS ASSOCIATION.] NELSON, November 13. Mr. H. Atmore, M.P., received the following letter from Mr. H. Sterling, General Manager of Railways:— ‘•Your letter of 9th inst., addressed to the Rt. Hon. the Minister of Railways, regarding the closing down, of {the Nelson section of railway has been referred to the Government Railways Board. In reply, lam desired to say that, the position is that the Board recently made a review of the financial results from the working of the branch lines and isolated sections. It found that the returns from - the Nelson section were not at all satisfactory, the section showing quite a substantial loss on working. The Board decided not to take immediate action* but to make a public statement in- the Press drawing attention to the position and indicating to the people that the question as to whether the line should remain open depended on the ultimate result of the use that was made of the line, which in turn was a matter, that rested finally with the people themelves. The present position is that the Board has postponed final decision in the matter in ordefi to give the people an opportunity of responding to the appeal that has been made. It. was the intention of the Board to review the position after a reasonable lapse of time (probably when the accounts had been made up for the current financial year), and a decision in regard to the further working of the line will be come to in the light of the results that have been, achieved.”
