Time 1.52 1-5. , THE RACINGDESCRIBED. ■ —— [SPECIAL TO “STAB.”] CHRISTCHURCH, November 7. A good attendance was attracted to Riccarton to-day by excellent weather arid the promise of a fine day’s sport. The public was not disappointed, although matters would have been considerably improved had the admonition given to the riders before the racing commenced been heeded. There was bad interference in almost every race, and the Judicial Committee had a very busy day. , .CARINTHIA BREAKS DOWN.

It was a good conditioned field that turned out for th©' Spring Hurdles, and the improvement in Lancer’s appearance since the Grand National recalled his good form at that meeting, and at the close of the betting he had a slight call over Captain’s Gift, with Carinthia the best-backed of the others. Captain’s Gift went to the front Immediately and tried, to stay there till the finish. Turning for home Lancer, Quinopal and Landmark were chasing him, arid in a fine race Landmark got up to win by half a length, with Quinopal a length away, only a head in front of Lancer. There was less than two lengths between the first four, and in so fast a run race Lancer’s lack of racing conidtion stopped him. Captain’s Gift reached for his fences, and this might have been the cause of his stopping in the last 100 yards. The winner was sore in Wellington, and was actually on the way home from Tirentham to Blenheim when plans were ctianged. He gave a poor exhibition when schooling at Riccarton, and naturally, paid a dividend running nearly to two figures. QUinopal went solidly, but Captain’s Gift would always beat him at the weights. Carinthia broke down badly during the race.

DUNRAVEN WAS UNLUCKY. Fiji was a warm order for the Spring Plate from Gallant Fox, Locksley, Ruling Light, Conway and Dunraven. Conjway gave a lot of trouble at the barrier, but thougfh he missed the jump, out he was in charge with Solitaire IL, Fiji and Palace at the end of a furlong. Palace was showing up slightly from Beacon Fire, Fiji and Locksley at the top of the straight, while Dunraven, who received a check at the turn, joined in before reaching the distance. In a punishing finish, Fiji hung on just long enough to beat Dunravefn by half a length, with Beacop Fire two lengths away, followed by Nightguard, Gold Pit, and Gallant Fox. Dunravep was the unlucky horse of (he race. He made a good run, on the fence to secure a position half-way through, but lost some of his advantage again before reaching the bend. Fiji hung on very gamely, and though he won, his form was hardly as good as that of Nightguard, who was going particularly well to get fourth from some way back at the turn for home. Beacon Fire is a useful three-year-old, though a mile is a little beyond him at present. The mile, too, seemed to be a littlp too far for Palace. Gold Pit nnfi Gallant Fox ran good races, but just not quite good enough to be in the money. Their turn might come before. the meeting is over. RIDER INJURED BY FALL. Chief Cook, Peter Jackson, and MQprblrd were, sorted out as the best bets, in, the Linwood Handicap, but one of the outsiders, Kakara, with a good run on the rails all the way, beat the favcurite and Moorbird rather well at Vhe finish. Ma Belle Polly, Solwit, Chief Cook, Hounslow and Grecian Prince comprised the front bunch at the turn, where was experiencing some difficulty in extricating herself from, the ruck. When she did at the distance, Kakara was in front from Chief Cook, and Moorbird just failed to egt to them at the post. Kakara won rather well, though Moorbird is certain to have beaten her and Chief Cook with a better run. Bachelor’s Idol ran a good race, and Jayson was also prominent at the finish. Grecian Prince failed to stay, apd Solwit and Hounslow also petered out after having every chance. A bad accident happened about a chain from the post, When Countermarch fell, bringing down Peter Jackson and Sharp Thorn. T. Metcalf, who had in the past, had a very bad run of accidents, was on Conntermarch and was so severely injured that he was rushed away to the hospital.

THE RACE FOR THE CUP. Admiral Drake was a good thing beaten In the New Zealand Cup. Apart from not getting too good a passage early, Gay Crest carried him out all the way from the distance. Mount Boa, Jaloux, Latin Quarter and Black Duke were in a bad scrimmage an the first half mile, Latin Quartet* being lucky to stand up. Black Duke and Latin Quarter were never afterwards in it. Passing the stands, Cflarmuine, Ephialtes, Martian Chief, Red Racer, Compris, Mount BOa and Spearful comprised the leading division. There was little change along the back until the six furlong post was reached, when Gay Crest, Admiral Drake, Royal Love and Jaloux commenced to move up. Ephiaites and Red Racer led into the straight with Gay Crest showing up from the bunch from behind. At the distance Gay Crest, Admiral Drake and Martian Chief, almost in lino, passed Red Racer, Ephialtes having dropped out, with Spearful and Jaloux making up ground. Admiral Drake at last shook oft Gay Crest, but just too late, for Spearful had headed him to hapg on to win by half a length, with Gay Crest a length and a half away. Jaloux finished fast in fourth place, just heading Compris and Royal Love. Hahikatoa was never prominent. The race was run at a great pace, and the time was the second fastest in the history of the event. Spearful won like a true stayer and, though, perhaps a trifle lucky in the last 'furlong, he had covered a fair amount of ground early in the piece. Jaloux ran easily his best race to date and, but for bad im terference early, he would have been in the money . Gay Crest carried his weight well, though it was a trifle beyond him to do it successfully. He was favourite from the time the machine opened, and when the betting closed he stlß had the call on Compris, Kahikatoa, Mount Boa and Jaloux, all Within a narrow range.

LACK A SMART YOUNGSTER. Lack was made a warm favourite for the Welcome Stakes, and he won easily by two lengths from La Modome, who beat her stable, mate Inflation by three lengths. Lack and La Moderne weer always at the head of affairs, with Oratorium next. The last named did not run on. Inflation was going well at the finish, but had no chance of catching the two in front. Both Inflation and Drumfire, who finished fourth, will be among the stayers when it comes to longer journeys in the autumn. Rulernut will be another useful one, though, perhaps not high-class.

AZALIA’S FIRST WIN. The Apprentices’ Handicap was a good thing for Azalea, though she won only by a neck. The Greenwood filly hit the front in the first furlong, and turning for home was leading from Barbican Jason’s Quest, Adventus, Rossferry and Filosol. The lad on Azalea kept her up to it and, though Barbacan made a determined effort, she could not head the leader. Filosol was two lengths away, with The Viscount, Jason’s Quest and Fast Passage next. The ’last-nained was running on at the right end, but was too far back earty, being last at two furlongs. Silver Salver and Fortune’s Wheel were badly interfered with, and were sent right out ofr it from handy positions in the first three furlongs.

BEST RACE OF THE DAYThe Stewards’ Handicap was the best race of the day. After Autopay gave trouble at the barrier, a good start was effected, except that the topweight dwelt slightly. Golden Wings was out in front early, and led on to the course porper from Palermo, Croupier, Arrow Lad, Gustavo and Red Heckle in a line. Then Cricket Bat could be seen coming through the field, and, Cimabue-from the rear on the outside of the field. In a great finish, Cimabue carried on to beat Golden Wings in the last few strides, by a neck. Then heads separated the next five, Which included Croupier, Red Heckle, Cricket Bat, Palermo and Arrow Lad. There is not much need to look beyond Cricket Bat for the winner of the Derby. He ran a great race and the outing was needed after tlie break in his preparation consequent upon an accident at the Wellington meeting. Golden Wings put up a brilliant performance, and just faded on the post. Cimabue is again at his best, and will be hard to beat with more weight when next he steps out. Croupier had every chance and his performance was not quite so good as that of Red Heckle and Cricket Bat, who finished immediately behind him. Gustavo jumped out well, but lost his position in the first furlong to reappear at the false rail. He will be all the better for tho race. It transpired after the race that Golden Wings crowded his field, the wprst sufferers being Cimabue, Red Heckle and Gustavo.

KING COLOSSUS SCORES WELL.

The favourite in the Riccarton Handicap, Gibraltar, was beaten rather comfortably by the second choice, King Colossus, and he had only a neck to spare from* Atholspear on the post. It was a good race, the field going in very close ordei’ foi* fully a furlong. Then Desert Song’s colours became most prominent from Minerval, Rational 11., King Colossus and Gibraltar. After’ turning for home Desert Song, Rational 11. and Minerval retired, and King Colossus went on to win by two lengths. Atholspear had to go round his field at the turn, and with, a little luck should, have beajten Gibraltar, and Ravine also put in a great run from last place just beyond the turn. Fullmark and Topere wer.e also well up but were the race run again the first four would again dispute the places.

Of these, Free Advice is the most likely to improve with racing though she looks very well even now. King’s Guard is a young horse who has come to it quickly, and on that account is thought to be a little out of his class at present, but performance has put him where he is and his Improvement had been rapid enough to, warrant the belief that the boot might

be shown to be on the other foot before long. RACING IN AUSTRALIA CUMBRIAN WINS V.R.C. HDCP. ' MELBOURNE, November 8. The weather for the V.R.C. Races yesterday was sultry.
