STRUCK BY TRAIN

ACCIDENT NEAR REWANUI Serious injuries were received by Mr. Charles Tanner, this morning, when he was struck by an engine on the railway between Rewanui and Dunollie. Mr. Tanner has been employed as a blacksmith at the State mine for many years, but was to-day employed by the Hunter co-operative party, owing to the State mine being idle through scarcity of orders. So far as can be ascertained, Mr. Tanner had been making a fire in close proximity to the railway line, preparatory to carrying out some repair work, and, without looking along the railway, was in the act of stepping over the line, when he was struck by the engine. It is understood that he is affected by deafness, and this would account for his failure to heai the approach of the train. The cowcatcher struck him on the leg, and caused him to fall backward on to the engine, receiving injuries to his rib.s and head. Mr Tanner is 58 years of age, and is married. He was conveyed to Grevinouth by train, reaching town just before 8.30 a.m. The ambulance was awaiting the arrival of the train, and conveyed Mr. Tanner to the Grey River Hospital. His condition this afternoon was unchanged.
