Mr. D. P. Shannahan, President of the West Coast branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, is visiting Wellington.

The death of the novelist “Lucas Malet,” whose real name was Mrs. Mary St. Leger Harrison, is announced from London. She was a daughter of Charles Kingsley.

Passengers who returned to Greymouth by yesterday’s 'express included Mr J- Cairney, Miss R. Cairney, Mr R. S. Wheeler, Mr G. Hanrahan, and Mr and Mrs J. McKenzie.

Guests at Revington’s include: Mr. J. A. Reeve (Auckland), Mr. R. Y. White, Mr. G. Cox, Mr. S. T. Partridge, Miss Partridge (Christchurch), Mr. E. J. Preen, Mr. G. Austed, Mr. R. B. Bartleet, Mr. H. A. Parkinson (Wellington), Mr. and Mrs. Gunn (Dunedin).

The death occurred at Christchurch yesterday, of Mr Edgar Turner, at the age of 56 years. He was for many years Chief Engineer on tile Blackball Company’s steamers trading to Greymouth. He resigned that position to become engineer to the Christchurch Tramways Board. Owing to ill-health he retired two years ago. His father was one of the promoters of the New Zealand Shipping Company.

Archdeacon Creed Meredith will not be returning to Wanganui, having accepted the Parish of Cheshunt, England. It is understood that the Archdeacon was advised by his doctors that he should not undertake strenuous work for some time owing to the poor state of his health. Archdeacon .Creed Meredith left Wanganui in April in order to proceed to England to undergo an operation. On his way Home it was found that it was necesary to operate at Port Said. It is understood that his recovery will be slow. He was the prime mover in the formation of the New Zealand Badminton Association, and was president for two years. He won the singles and doubles titles at the first tournament, and has been runner-up on several occasions. He is president of the New Zealand Croquet Association, and has also been president of the Manawatu association.
