RAILWAY FARES.

x [TO THE EDITOB.] Sir, —Your correspondent “Inquirer” may not know that now the Railways Department convey passengers at practically one penny per mile for short journeys (second-class), and less for long distances. For instance, the return fare, Timaru-Greymouth, last year ordinary time was 53/- compared with 39/- this year. Work that out, “Inquirer,” and you will see it is less than one penny per mile. Most of the year people travel, and the reduced fares will accommodate many who during holidays have to work and in the past were obliged to travel when excursion concessions had been withdrawn. The “fly in the ointment”

is the expense of making connection by steamer between the North and South Islands. If the Union Steam Ship Company would fall into line with the Railways Department and grant reduced fares for six months of the year, I am sure the business accruing would be of benefit to all.— Yours, etc., PATER FAMILIAS. Cobden, October 30.
