REEFTON NOTES

[OTTE OWN COBBEBPONDENT.]

REEFTON, October 30.

At the monthly meeting of the Women’s Institute at St. Stephen’s Sunday Schoolroom last evening, the proceedings took the form of a guest night. Mr H. Cooper, together with Messrs J. Patterson, W. B. Auld and J. B. Auld recounted happenings in the early days of Reefton. Mr Cooper was the principal speaker, and gave an account of his arrival in 1879 and experiences subsequent to that period, some being particularly amusing and interesting. A fine display of home handicrafts was on view, one being a pair of lambs wool-lined moccasins, the work of Mrs I. Patterson, together with vases, trays, and specimens of passe partout work by various other members. A community sing was engaged. in, after which supper was served by the members of the Institute. A display of old-time photographs by Mrs J. B. Auld helped to visualise Reefton in its evolution from the bush. The Reefton Fire Brigade are sending two teams to Westport to-day to compete at the annual meeting of the West Coast Fire Brigades’ Association, which takes place to-morrow. The Reef ton teams will comprise C. Coxall, C. Curtis, C. McElwee, F. Lawry and S. Newcombe. The Wesley Tennis Court was opened yesterday in glorious sunshine, and a large crowd assembled. The Ladies’ Guild of the Wesley Church provided afternoon tea. A noticeable feature was the large number of young people who

participated in play on the court. Rev T. W. Parsons, president of the club, declared the court open and hoped for a successful season. There is every indication of the hope being realised. A general meeting of the Reefton Prospecting Association was held last evening. Mr T. E- Williams presided. The Reefton Unemployment Board wrote offering to co-operate, and stating the conditions to be observed, men to be employed under a competent prospector. A sub-committee of the President, Secretary and Mr N. Lawn was appointed to wait on the local Unemployment Committee regarding the position as to employing men prospecting. The President urged the immediate registration of the Association, making the body if possible the parent body of the Coast. The rules submitted by the Exec.u-

tive Committee were adopted, with slight amendments. It was decided to register the rules and proceed with the- incorporation of the Association. Messrs W. Kirwan and W. J. Morris were appointed trustees.
