SPORTING

j NEWS AND NOTESKozan: \ Was an unlucky runner at Trentham. With a better run he may have won on Monday. He will be a great bracket with Croupier in the Stewards Handicap. Lady Pam: Raced below form at Trentham. There was an excuse for her in the greasy going on Saturday, but in the Harcourt Cup she never threatened danger. Esteem: The half-brother to Commendation disappointed at Trentham, and will require to show improved form to have any choice in the Derby. Gold Pit: Petered out at the business end of her races at Trentham, and that does not augur well for her Oak prospects, over a mile and a-half. Spearful :j Did not race at Trentham, but will be given a race at Carterton to-mor-row to sharpen him up for his New Zealand Cup engagement. Black Duke: Made only moderate showings at Trentham, and his form does not suggest a very bright chance in the twoinile race next month. Gay Crest: Of the New Zealand Cup candidates to race at Trenthani, Gay Crest made most friends. The racing should improve his condition, and Gay Crest will be a fit horse at Riccarotn. Cricket Bat: Was galloped on at Trentham on tho first day, and was unable to keep his engagement in the Harcourt Cup. The accident may seriously interfere with the three-year-old’s Derby chances. Jaloux:

Although he can stay, he will have to improve to have any chance in the New Zealand Cup.

Admiral Drake: Has a light weight in the New Zealand Cup, and providing he can see cut the journey, he is a possibility. He is liable to re-handicap. Will Have to Improve; Duellona, Black Mint, Spear Lad, and Flower will all need considerable improvement on the form displayed during the Wellington meeting to have any chance in the Cup. Flower, however, shows signs of being a sticker at the end of her racesCompris: Had one race, taking on the Wellington Handicap the first day. He was prominent for a long way in the running, and then dropped back, only to run on again at the end- It was a satisfactory effort from a New Zealand Cup point of view He was ridden by R. Reed, who, it is understood, -will have the ride at Riccarton. Earned & Penalty: As a result of wins at the Wellington meeting, Emotion will have to carry a 1001 b penalty in the Carterton Hack Handicap on Saturday, making his weight 9.1. Similarly, Tobacco Land goes up to 8.6 in the Bunny Memorial Handicap. Losi a Stirrup: It is reported that the rider of Lochlaggon lost a stirrup iron towards the finish of the Trial Plate at Rangiora on Saturday. She was made a hot favourite, and from a straggly start was one of the smartest out, but at the finish was beaten into third place by Monastic and Jason’s Quest. In Oaks and Derby: Out of the seventeen fillies that have had their engagement continued in the Oaks Stakes only two, Cape Gold and Ruling Light, are engaged in the Derby. Light-weight jockeys will be in great demand in the New Zealand Cup. Out of twenty acceptors, ten are on the minimum and seven others are handicapped from 7-8 to 7.1. Brilliant Croupier: Croupier’s win in the Harcourt Cup proved his brilliancy, and it would be difficult to. go past him as a Stewards’ Handicap prospect. The stable may, however, rely on Kozan for that race, and reserve Croupier for the big handicap events at Ellerslie. He has had a strenuous programme this : season, but there is no doubt of his galloping ability.

Bronze Eagle: Had every chance to show his prowess in the Harcourt Cup, but apparently he is not going to turn out as good a three-year-old as last season’s form suggested, and on his two races to date he does not appeal as a likely Derby winner. His rider kept him under restraint in second place for over half tiie journey, with a. view to slowing up the remainder oi the Held, and hoping that Croupier would come back, so that the race would resolve itself into a sprint home. Croupier, however, made full use of the break he obtained while these tactics were being pursued, and his, rider was able to give him a respite for a couple of furlongs. After passing the six furlongs post, Gray attempted to close up the gap, but Croupier, went away again from him m the straight.

BANKS PENINSULA R.C. [special to “stab.”] CHRISTCHURCH, October 29. The Banks Peninsula meeting on Saturday looks like being highly successful. The acceptances are really good and if the present brilliant weather continues over the week-end a big crowd should muster at Motukarara. Rangiora form might be upset by the changed nature of the track. At Rangiora. a. lot of the well-fancied hoi ses failed to handle the sharp bends while at Motukarara the track is laid out much better with only two bends in the mile circuit and consequently longer straights. No fewer than eight N.Z. Cup candidates figure in the Akaroa Handicap and of them Royal Love, Martian Chief and Gay Crest on recent form will carry plenty of money. They are not gbing to have matters all their own way and Topere as a recent winner is well-treated on the minimum, while Ravine stayed so well at Rangiora that he must be given a chance on Saturday if started. He is more likely to go for the seven furlong race, the Le Eon’s Handicap. Royal Love and Topere read well at the weights in an open contest. Though Monastic won nicely at

Rangiora he will have a hard job to beat the better lot opposed to him in the Halswell Hack Handicap, Weatherly, Lochlaggan, Night Recital and Crash, Grecian Prince and Solvent must all have chances. The last mentioned will be all the better for her race at North Canterbury and though she might not btf able to carry 9.5 successfully at Motukarara, she will be in the fighting line and the race should further improve her in view of the Stewards Handicap at Riccarton in which she will have over 2st less to carry. Weatherly, Night Recital and Solvent might be the order of the finish on Saturday. Juniper will go better at Motukarara than he did at Rangiora as the track will suit him better and of his opponents in the Le Bon’s Handicap, Ravine and Sleipner should be the hardest he has to beat. They are not a good lot in the Kaituna Highweight Hack Handicap and Pure Gold, who won so well in similar company at Rangiora should go close again. Jason’s Quest and Tarquinius should also be prominent. Moorbird has been so consistently unlucky in her races during the past few weeks that it is reasonable to expect that for once she will get a good passage in the Brackenfield Hack Handicap. She stands out as the best of those under 8 st. and of those above her in the handicap Solwit and Waiwene read well.

With so many on the front mark in both the trotting events much will depend upon the draw for positions. Ciro won easily at Oamaru and the small penalty at Motukarara may not be sufficient to bring him back to his field in the Ducanchelles Trot. Goldworthy, another recent winner, must also merit support. In the Little River Handicap Trot Senorita may go a lot better than she did at Rangiora, and Plain Silk and Wild Guy may be the hardest she has to beat.
