DOBSON MINE

CHAIRMAN’S STATEMENT. [pee pbess association.] CHRISTCHURCH, October 28. Regarding the Dobson Mine, the Chairman of Directors of the Gi ey Valley Collieries, Ltd., Mr C. C- Davis, of Christchurch, referring to the rejection by the Grey Valley Miners Union of the proposals taken back by the Union delegates from the recent conference in Christchurch, said, this evening, that the acceptance of the proposals would have enabled an early resumption of work at the colliery. “It would have provided immediate employment for at least two-thirds of the men affected,” he said. “We had reason to believe that the scheme finally evolved, after many hours of close conference, was acceptable to the responsible Union delegates, and was to receive their endorsement. That the scheme has received such summary treatment at the hands of the rank and file of the Union is, to say the least of it, regrettable. There are undoubtedly many men of an excellent type among the miners at Dobson — steady, hard-working men, who have established their homes in the district —and it is these men who suffer most in such periods of enforced idleness. However, it can be taken as definite, that the Company’s representatives went as far as they possibly could go towards meeting the men’s wishes, and it would be idle to suppose that any further concessions can be made.”
