FARM FIRE FATALITIES
STORY OF WITCHCRAFT. BERLIN, March 21. Tho belief in witchcraft is .still extant in some country districts in Germany, and is blamed for a crime for which two men will be charged with murder on Monday at Stade, Hanover. Hermann Meyer, a small farmer of Kleinfredenbeck, could not understand why his cattle failed and those of his neighbours thrived. He consulted a gipsy woman, who told him that they were bewitched by another farmer’s wife, whom Meyer identified as a Frau Hoeft. With the help of a cattle-dealer named Tiedmann, Meyer, is alleged to have set fire to the Hoeft farmhouse. Whilst Hoeft and his son were rescuing their cattle, a wall collapsed and both were killed.
