SOCCER FOOTBALL

WESTLAND CUP MATCHES. I The Westland Cup fixtures were adIvanced a further stage on Saturday. I All the grounds were in good order, and the weather was fine. The standard of play was high, the large number of spectators at each match being treated to a good exposition of the code. There were two surprises, R - ■wanui’s defeat of Taylorville shocked the latter’s supporters, and the other surprise packet was the big defeat Greymouth met at the hands of Dob-

SOU. , , , . Dobson v. Greymouth, played at Dobson. Greymouth right away endeavoured to force the pace, but Anderson was checked by Erskine, and the ball was allowed to go into toudh. Bayley got possession on the Greymouth left and delivered a good ball, which, however, went behind. Clasper was next in evidence with a shot, but went wide. Dobson from the goal kick bore down on Stitt’s charge, and Coutts soon had a try from close, range. Stitt in saving his shot, however, carried the ball too' far, and things looked dangerous for Greymouth. R. White sent right across the goal mouth, and Ford was allowed to clear. So far Greymouth were displaying most method, yet Dobson were the nippier side and got over the ground much quicker. Both wingers were getting every opportunity to shine, with the result that Ford and Brown were kept busy. Mitchell in the Dobson goal had always to be on the alert. Shots from Bayley and Clasper were saved in quick succession, and a further rally on the Dobson goal saw Nordstrom head past when in a good position to score. About fifteen minutes had gone when Dobson got a lucky goal. White crossed the ball, and King running in made “siccar,” Stitt failing to get near what seemed an easy ball. The goal gave Dobson confidence and in another five minutes W. White headed a lovely goal from across by Coutts, Stitt having no chance. Dobson * continued to have the upper hand and Stitt made a great save. It meant a corner kick, but that was readily understood. Coutts sent well over and Shortt sent the ball behind. Each goal was visited in turn, and Mitchell was fortunate to save a good cross shot from J. Anderson. Subsequently -play was o£ a quiet order, and for a time combination on either side was not seen, and when the thirty-seventh minute was clocked, King added another goal for Dobson. Three goals down did not seem to unduly disconcert Greymouth, and consequent on some good play by Clasper their forwards were soon ip action, and Erskine was forced to concede a corner. J. Anderson sent over well, and latterly Mitchell was lucky to get his hads on a bouncing ball front R. Anderson. Back came Dobson, and Stitt was called upon to clear from King. Bayley forced a corner and Greymouth were pressing at-the interval. Dobson 3, Greymouth 0

On the resumption, Dobson took play right into Greymouth territory, without Stitt being troubled. R. Anderson sent Greymouth right away, but the inside failed to profit when they were given a gQOd opportunity to score. A penalty against Hall resulted in King scoring a fourth goal from Dobson after six minutes’ play. There was only one team in the game thereafter, and that was not Greymouth, though a breakaway on the left saw Bayley beat the Dobson defence on his own, and sending the ball to J. Anderson this player notched the first goal for Greynlouth. Dobson thereafter held the upper hand, and it came as no surprise when Shortt notched a fifth goal, and a minute later W. White brought the total to six. Good combination by Dobson thereafter was seen, but the forwards lacked finish, and Greymouth carried play into Dobson territory, and time came with the scores being Dobson 6, Greymputh 1. At the beginning of the game a little steadiness on the part of the Greymouth forwards would have meant a score, and for the first twenty minutes were the better team and were decidedly unfortunate to find themselves two goals in arerars. Thereafter Dobson asserted themselves and gave a good exposition of the code. There was no outstanding player on either side.

Rewanui v. Taylorville, played at Dunollie. —Rewanui kicked off and an even first half saw the scores end ing one all. In the second half the home team, played the better game, and ran out winners by four goals to three.

Cobden v. Runanga, played at Cobden.—Cobden played well and led by two goals to nil at half-time. In the second half both teams scored once, the result being three goals to one in Cobden’s favour. Scorers, Maughan 2, McLean for Cobden and Tinnioh for Runanga. THIRD GRADE. Technical 5, Grey 1; Rewanui 3, Marist 2. CHATHAM CUP. A large attendance of delegates was held in the Lyceum Hall on Saturday night to consider the advisability of the various clubs entering for the Chatham Cup competition. Three clubs were nominated, Dobson, Cobden, Greymouth, the other delegates taking the report of the meeting back to their clubs for consideration. A remit from the Dobson Club that all referees be paid 5/- was received. WELLINGTON MATCHES WELLINGTON, May 9. First Division: Marist 3, Petone 5.
