MR. LYONS DEFEATED
LANGITES SAVE GOVT. MAJORITY ONLY TWO [BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] CANBERRA, May 8. The debate on Mr Lyons’ no confidence motion ended abruptly in the House of Representatives to-day. Mr Scullin, applied the closure to the debate. The no confidence motion was defeated by two votes, the voting being: For the motion 32; against 31. Mr Lyons’ speech in moving the motion was interrupted by a i tinning fire of interjections. He said that the call to him was one that came not alone from the Press, but it was a call from Australia. Mr Blakeley: It is the boodle call! Mr Lyons said that he was'‘looking forward to the time when he could play his part in the restoration (of prosperity and confidence. EARLY ELECTION EXPECTED. There is an impression at Canberra, that the Prime Minister, having regard to the augmented Opposition, and the futility "of trying to carry on along the present lines, will declare for a general election before July or August. The financial position continues to drift alarmingly, and the only way the Government proposes to cope with it, is by means of a fiduciary issue. Well informed opinion is that the Senate is certain to reject the Commonwealth Bank Bill, which authorises a further shipment of gold. NEW PARTY WELCOMED. LONDON, May 8. The “Daily Telegraph” describes Australia’s new party as the healthiest and the most promising political enterprise the Commonwealth has. kno.wn for many a long day. It means infusion of new life and vigorous realism into Australian politics, under a leader, whose courage and personality has won national recognition. N.S. WALES DEFICIT. (Recd. May 9, 10.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, May 9. A deficit of £7,789,420 in the finances of New South Wales was revealed in the figures for the first ten months of the present financial year. The revenue amounts to. £32,995,092 and the expenditure £40,784,512. VICTORIA’S SHORTAGE. MELBOURNE, May 9. Although the Treasury statement for the ten months shows a shortage of. £4,994,200 adjustments during the remaining two months are expected to reduce Victoria’s deficit to £2,000,000. QUEENSLAND’S SURPLUS. BRISBANE, May 9. On April 30 Queensland had a credit' balance of £2,394,392 in all funds. TASMANIAN FIGURES. HOBART, May 9. A statement of consolidated revenue shows that expenditure exceeded receipts for the ten months by'£225,440.
