“TEDDY” GOES ASHORE. [FEB PBESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, May 8. A telegram from the principal lighthouse-keeper at Cape Brett stated that the yacht Teddy went ashore at 10 a.m. yesterday in a south-easterly gale. He added he was speaking to the master lastt night on the telephone at Rawhiti. The master said that the yacht was in a safe position on a sandy bottom, and that the offered assistance was not required. Meantime the weather is moderating. “PROGRESS” SURVIVORS. WELLINGTON, May 8. The survivors of the “Progress’ wreck, Messrs Kustaa Haneroa, William Evans, J. A. Collins, Jack Morgan, Felix Kurisck, and Fritz Degerholm, were discharged from the hospital. John Metcalf, ship’s fireman, is reported to be in a fairly serious condition, although the hospital authorities stated to-day there was a slight improvement. As Metcalf was in the ship’s engine-room., his evidence should be of interest at the inquiry into the mishap. It is his illness that is holding up the preliminary inquiry conducted by the (Marine Department. LIFEBOAT AT ISLAND BAY. WELLINGTON, May 8. The necessity for a lifeboat service at Island Bay was stressed by a deputation to Mr Forbes, which urged that had a lifeboat been available on the occasion of the Progress disaster, it would have been possible to save the lives of all. the crew.
Mr Forbes expressed sympathy with the request, but said he thought the whole matter should be inquired into by a conference of representatives of the various interested parties, including the Government. He subsequently made a suggestion that the Island Bay residents might see their way clear to raise a fund, and in the event of that being done, he would be prepared to consider making a fifty-fifty contribution.
