FIRST DAY’S RESULTS. [our own CORRESPONDENT.] HOKITIKA, May 8. The session opened last night to a good house. The President (Mr D. J. Evans) made a few opening remarks on the good entries and introduced the judges, and Mr Byron Brown (elocutionary judge) duly replied. Following were the awards: — Musical Monologue, 15 and under 18 years.—Miss F. Collogan “Bubbles,” 77pts, 1; Miss Edna Howat, “My Aim” 76, 2; Misses Mary McGavin and N. Wormington 75pts each. Five competitors.

Contralto Solo, “Still as the Night” (Bohm).—Miss L. Knight 80, 1.; Mrs R. Findlay 75, 2. Three competitors. / Recitation (ladies), “The Women of the West”.—Miss Nancy Wright 79, 1; Miss Hazel Perry 76, 2. Only competitors.

Piano Duet, “Spanish Dance.” — Messrs H. Thiele and W. A. Lindsay 80, 1; Misses Lily Staines and J. McIntosh 65, 2. Only competitors. Musical Monologue (humorous), under 18 years.—Miss Joy Ward, “The Three Trees,” 80, 1; Miss Rose Parker, “Rosie’s Relations,” 75, 2. Three competitors.

Operatic Dance, 15 year’s and over. —Miss Nancy Wright 75, 1; Miss Iris Walker 74, 2; Miss L. Staines 67, h.c. Four competitors.'

Violin Solo, “Indian Lament.” —D. Heinz 84, 1; V. Martin 76, 2. The judge said he had hoped for more competitors in this section and was disappointed. Baritone Soilo, “Sea Fever”. —Mr Cecil Wright was the only competitor. Humorous Solo (own selection). — The judge remarked that neither of tile two competitors sang a humorous Song, therefore he could not make an award, but he gave Mrs Turnbull 80 marks for artistic rendering of her song “John.” Barefoot Dance, 15 years and over. —Miss E. Rohloff 70, 1; Misses I. Walker and N. Wright tied for second place with 69 marks. Four competitors.

Piano Solo, 16 and under 19 years, “Waltz in G Sharp Minor.”- —Miss E. Robinson 93, 1; Miss L. Staines 2. Only competitors. The judges were:—Dancing Miss Muriel Waugh (Christchurch); music, Mr Arthur Lilley, A.R.C.O. (Christchurch), and elocution, Mr R. Byron Brown (Wellington).
