ENTERTAINMENTS

OPERA HOUSE—TO-NIGHT. One of the difficult things in casting a picture is selecting players supposed to be members of the same family in the story, declares Edward H. /.Griffith. Since most actors or actresses attain fame because of their individuality, this is rather., difficult .to achieve. Director Griffith was faced with this task on “Holiday,” the Pathe picturisation of the Philip Barry drama to be screened to-night and Thursday. Ann Harding fills the featured lead, and it was necessary to find players who could portray her sister and brother. Mr Griffith finally settled upon Mary Astor for the sister and a New York stage actor (Monroe, Owsley) for the brother., “WAy Out West” will be screened at Blackball to-night and Thursday. DRUIDS’ HALL. To-night at the Druids’, Hall, the Greymouth, Soccer Club will hold its usual weekly Old Time Dance. These dances last season were very , popular. A learners’ class will be held from 7.30 to 8.30. The music will be good, and an efficient M.C. is in charge of the floor. There will be cards for non dancers. GREYMOUTH FRIVOLITIES. Designed as a joyous antidote to depression the Greymouth Frivolities’ concert, to be held at the Town Hall on Tuesday, May 12, possesses, a wealth of novel attractions, that combined with the combination of talented amateur artists appearing, should make the Frivolities one of the most enjoyable entertainments yet staged locally. The humorous side of the programme will be attended to by popular favourites in Messrs A. A. Rouse, A. H. Wilde and Coll, whose laughter-provoking abilities are too well known to need further praise. Miss Mavis Burgoyne and Miss Dorothy Thwaites will each present solo dances, and their talented pupils will be seen in artistic ballots. Leading Greymouth vocalists, Mrs C. Moss and Messrs J. Hadland and A. Nicholson will also feature on the programme. The novelty items will include a soul-stirring lecture on big game hunting, a weight-lifting demonstration, a speech on women’s stiffrage and a sketch, “Bush Whisky.” Restieaux’s orchestra will supply the music, and Mrs H. C. Murch is official accompaniste. PLUNKET BALL. The annual Plunket Society’s Ball is always accounted one of the most popular and successful dances of the year, and the 1931 dance to be held in Schaef’s Hall to-morrow (Thursday) night will be no exception, patrons attending it being assured of a most enjoyable evening. Steel’s orchestra will provide the music and fin energetic committee has charge of the arrangements. DANCE AT SCHAEF’S. A good - crowd was in attendance at Schaef’s Hall last evening when z a dance was held by Mr Les Grummitt and his dance orchestra.
