MOTORIST ON TRIAL.
[PEB PBESS ASSOCIATION.] CHRISTCHURCH, May 6. In the Supreme Court, Leslie Norman Mclntosh was charged with negligently driving a motor car on the Main North Road, thereby causing the death of George H. Garbutt. The Crown Prosecutor said that at eleven o’clock ori. the night of January 25, Garbutt, a chemist, of Kaiapoi, was killed near the Northern Waimakariri bridge. Garbutt, who was on a motorcycle, passed a taxi going from Christchurch, and was fifty yards ahead, going over the bridge. The taxi man saw a motor bar coming from the opposite direction, and this car, a witnes would say, was on the wrong side of the road when the crash occurred. Accused’s car did riot stop, but continued on, to crash into-the taxi. Accused, when interviewed after the accident, said that he did not feel too well, and Umre was a smell of alcohol on his breath. Accused said that he was driving along the road When a motor-cyclist approaching swerved into him. The case is proceeding. ACQUITTED. N„ May 5. Edward Ralph Martin was foiind not guilty at the Supreme Court, today, on two charges of obtainirig money by falsely representing he was a qualified miner and a geologist, and that he discovered gold at Tokoniaru. £2400 DAMAGES AWARDED PALMERSTON N„ May 6. In the Supreme Court, to-day, Ph’.ilip Llewellyn Smith, Bunnythorpc, roadman, proceeded against Johnathan Symonds and Alice May Symonds of Feilding claiming £4OOO general and £629 special damages for injuries received iii a motor collision at Bunnvthorpe on August 18, in consequence of which his leg was amputated. Justice MacGregor awarded £lBOO general and £604 special damages.
