MR G. CLARK.

A meeting of business men was held this morning at the Chamber of Commerce, to farewell Mr G. Clark, Chief Postmaster at Greymouth, who will leave to-morrow on transfer to Oamaru, and to meet Mr A. I. Flett, formerly of Westport, who is to take over Mr Clark’s position. Mr P. J. McLean (chairman of the Chamber of Commerce) presided, and there were also present: Messrs J. W. Greenslade (Mayor of Greymouth), F.rA. Kitchingham, C. L. Kettle, A. Naylor, J. S. Robertson, W. B. Cunningham, T. A. Johnston, T. E. Coates, M. J. Fogarty, F B. Lawn, K. H. Smythe, A. M. Carroll, T. A. W. Tate, A. Naylor, L. W. Louisson, and W. Fletcher. Apologies were received from Messrs Moss, Carey, Garde and Tennent. Mr McLean, in making the presenta-. tion of a case of pipes to Mr Clark, stated that the business people of Greymouth appreciated to the full the many courtesies Mr Clark had shown them and the endeavours he had made to further the interests of the town and district.

The Mayor said that Mr Clark had always been prominent in furthering the interests of the town and district, and they wished him every success in Oamaru.

Mr Kitchingham said that servants could be, broadly, divided in,to two classes —those who said that things could not be done, and those who , said they could be done. Mr Clark belonged ( to the latter class. He had always met the members of the Chamber of Commerce with an open miiid arid conceded to them everything possible. , Messrs Coates, Naylor, Cunningham, Fletcher, Robertson, Carrol, Lawn, Johnston, Smythe, Pratt, Shallcra«s and Louisson also paid a tribute to the efficiency and courtesy displayed bv Mr Clark during his stay in Greymouth.

Mr Clark said that the gathering showed that the work of the P. and T. Department was appreciated by business men. His stay iin Greymouth had been short, but busy, including as it did the change-over to the new building. It was the aim of his Department to give good service to all and it had been his aim to see that the Department's intentions were properly carried out. He thought that the postal facilities at present afforued bv Greymouth were the equal if any office in the Dominion. Mr Clark expressed the hope . that he later be able to return to the Coast and view with more time at his disposal, its unique scenery. lie ask6d for Mr Flett the same courtesies which had been extended hnn during his stay in Greymouth. Mr Flett said that Mr Clark had left him a difficult reputation to beat, but he would make an honest and wholehearted effort ,to iriairitain the office at the same height of efficiency.
