SPORTING

RACING. MEETINGS TO COME.

TO-DAY’S NEWS. Admiral Drake: Has been purchased by Mr J. M. Samson, the Dunedin owner, and carried his colours at Trentham on Thursday. Cylinder Out: Went wrong on the eve of the Wellington Cup, and will require about 12 months’ spell. The trouble is in the ligament where it joins the fetlock, and Cylinder has been thrown out of training. Tunbridge: But for meeting interference at a critical stage in the High Weight Handicap on Thursday, might have won. He got stopped less than a furlong from the post. Appeal: Nearly brought off a big surprise in the Trial Plate on Thursday. He finished third, but only heads separated the placed horses, and Appeal was neglected in the betting. Stanchem: Was badly left at the barrier on Thursday and tailed the field until well into the straight. He is an unruly brute at the start of a race and delayed the despatch in the Wellington Cup. Solvear: There is a mistaken belief by many that Solveai* is a twin foal, but this is brought about by the fact that Rosevear, the dam, did produce twins, a filly and a gelding, to Solferino, one of the foals living only a few days. Mr J. Stewart gave the other foal away to a friend, and it died two years ago. Rosevear was sent back to Solferino the following season, and Solvear was foaled. The news that Solvear is not a twin foal will come as a surprise to many, but the fact remains.

Meadow Park: Is going to be dangerous in any race he contests from now. Distortion: Is a half-brother to the Wellington Cup winner, Stanchion, and his placed performances at Trentham suggested that he is likely to be again prominent during the season. Otairi: Is going to be a big problem for his opponents in hurdle races in the winter. i Mister Gamp: By his recent victories, showed that he is very well, and ready to prove a hard proposition in hurdle races during the winter. TROTTING. MEETINGS TO COME. January 29, 31 —Forbury Park T.C. Summer. February 14 —Wellington T.C. February 18 —Clifden R.C. Annual (two events). January 29 —Northland T.C. Annual. February 4 —Tapanui R.C.' Annual. February 7 —Metropolitan T.C. Summer. February 25 —Auckland T.C. February 21—Kaikoura T.C. February 27, 28 —Marlborough R.C. Summer (two events each day). March 28 —Thames T.C. Annual. LIGHT HARNESS PERFORMERS. Purser: Has now settled down to commence right in his races. Purser is best over a two-mile course. Bright Light: Trotted solidly all the way, to win the Kaitoke Handicap at the Wellington T.C. meeting, and his stamina at the end assisted towariS his victory. David McElwyn: The recently-arrived stallion is not yet three years old, being about six months younger than New Zealand horses who rank at that age. David McElwyn looks likely to make good as a high-grade pacer.

J Harold Logan: The victory of Harold Logan in the New Zealand Trotting Gold Cup at Wellington on Saturday once more provided evidence of how Dame Fortune bestows her smiles upon one and frowns upon another (says a northern writer). Less than two years ago the horse was owned by an Oamaru, trainer, F. L. Legge, who, failing to do any good with it, sold it to its present owner, Miss E. Hinds, of Christchurch, for £lOO. Immediately Harold Logan began winning, and in its first ten starts for Miss Hinds it won eight races, and in prize money has earned about £4,000. In the meantime, his former owner, Legge, could do nothing right, and in a fit of depression a couple of months back he committed suicide.

Explosion: At Epsom on Tuesday, was timed by his trainer-driver, to go the last mile and a-half of a two-mile journey in 3.22, the last half-mile in 1.5. This seems almost too good to be true. Some Dillon: When Some Dillon goes right, he should win. This week at Otahuhu on the clay track he covered two miles in 4.29, and before the Cup meeting on the same track, he went 4.27. Kewpie’s Trump: ' Cannot be regarded as a betting proposition, in view of his recent track work. He has been pacing badly. Ambieside: If he can be kept sound, Ambleside will soon win a race, but the horse gives his trainer a lot of trouble. Major Brent: Won recently at Westport, looks to be on the improve. He should perform v well at New Brighton to-day. Gemlight: This trotter is now being trained by F. G. Holmes at Addington. When trained by A. Hendricksen, Gemlight raced well, but since that time he has not done much of account. FORBURY PARK ACCEPTANCES.
