HERD TESTING

WEST COAST FIGURES.

With the average for the Dominion standing at 1801 b. of butter fat per cow, for twelve months, the first month’s testing of herds on the West Coast, has revealed figures which are agreeably surprising. When the newly formed West Coast Herd-testing Association commenced a test on October 1, it was generally anticipated that the average would fall below the Dominion average. On the figures given below, however, the West Coast compares favourably with other provinces, where better farming facilities, in the way of extensive top-dressing subdivision, and rotational grazing are offered. Following on one of the hardest winters, and the unfavourable spring experienced on the Coast, the results are most satisfactory, and encouraging. The testing will be continued until May 31, each herd being tested once each month. Three testing officers are carrying out the work, the area having been divided into three groups, South Westland, Middle Group (Kokatahi to Ahaura), and the Northern Group (above Ahaura), and on to Inangahua). Owing to the scattered nature of the groups, they have been divided into districts, so that each may keep its identity. The average return per cow, and the highest cow in each district for October, is shown in the following return; — Number of cows tested.
