King, D. J. Evans. Apologies for absence were made foi Crs. Teichelmann, Armstrong, Heinz, Elcock and Turner. Mr. F. W. Chesterman applied for annual leave, to be taken about the second week in November.-—Granted. Mr P. J. Kirwan, Hokitika, applied for permission to install an additional petrol pump of the carbon type at premises in Sewell Street. —Granted on the usual conditions. The Secretary of the Hokitika Poultry Society wrote asking for assistance towards entertaining delegates to the South Island Conference, to be held at Hokitika next month.— £?/3/- granted. It was resolved that the matter ol obtaining dog collars be left with the Town Clerk to attend to. The Treasurer reported receipts £l5l/1/5, payments £-130, credit £63 17/1. On the motion'of Cr King, seconded by Cr Duff, it was resolved to hold the meetings of the council during the summer months monthly, instead of fortnightly. The Mayor submitted the following report on the Borough drains: —In accordance with the Council’s decision at last meeting, Crs Heinz, Armstrong, Duff. Evans and myself made an inspection of the borough drains on the 15th instant, and we beg to report as follows: —The Foreman havir.g inspected and reported that there is no block in the Sewell Street drain, it is evident that means will have to bo provided to permit the water in Cameron’S paddock to clear as quickly as possible after heavy rain, and we recommend that the north Town Belt drain be cleaned out and an exit cut through the sand, and box levels be taken to ensure sufficient fall to the beach; the drain to be timbered where necessary; and to renew the box drain across the north Belt Road. In this connection we would suggest that the Superintendent of the Mental Hospital be asked to give assistance to the Council in respect of the overflow of water from the Mental Hospital grounds to the beach, and further, that the Borough foreman furnish an estimate of the cost of connecting the existing drain in Tancred Street to Cameron’s paddock. In regard to the open drain in Mandi’s section, next to Mr. Brooks’ in Fitzherbert Street, we recommend that this be piped sufficiently to do away with the existing nuisance, and also that the grating and box at the connecting points at Fitzherbert Street be renewed. In regard to Mr Caliari’s complaint re flooding of his section, we recommend that the Livingstone Street drain be cleaned out and be re-timbered under G’bson’s Quay to the outlet, a distance of approximately 25ft, the growth which is removed from the drain to be burnt. The culvert under the road at Davie Street should be cleared of debris. The Rolleston Street drain at Mr Appleton’s residence also requires to be cleaned out-.-

It was resolved to have the recommendations carried out, as circumstances permit.
