SOCCER FOOTBALL

HESLIN KNOCK-OUT CUP. The three games for the Heslin Knock-out Cup were played according to schedule on Saturday. The weather was favourable and conditions underneath were good, and it was expected that some good games would be played. The pick of the basket seemed to be Rewanui v. Taylorville, but throughout the ninety minutes’ play tho game was only fair. Likewise, Cobden and Greymouth. The best of the three games seemed to be at Blackball, where Dobson as visitors triumphed by four goals to two. The results were: —

Taylorville 1, Rewanui 0. Cobden 6, Greymouth 2. Dobson 4, Blackball 2.

REWANUI v. TAYLORVILLE

Rewanui: Timlin, S. Marley, Moor, Deardon, Hillhouse, Pattinson, Timlin, Malpass, M. Marley, Hewison, Doherty.

Taylorville: Connors, Kitto, Glenn, Mairs, Rutherford, Beaton, Hoggarth, Russell, Glenn, Pickering, Thomas. Referee, Mr Hunt, Dobson.

Taylorville were the first to do anything of note Glenn putting in a smart piece of work to let Hoggarth away. Hoggarth looked dangerous, but a hefty tackle by Moor robbed him of a good chance. It was a good start for Taylorvile, but Pattinson equalised matters by sending tho home forwards away. Hewison was nearly through, his shot being saved by Connors. Timlin then forced a corner of Glenn. Beaton cleared and Russell and Hoggarth followed up the advantage, and Taylorville went down with a rush, but a vigorous defence sent them back empty-handed. A foul throw against Mairs followed,, and things looked dangerous for Taylorville, but Pattinson sent past from a good position. It was at the other end where the real chances were going at this period, and Glenn was the sinner' in finishing weakly. Next minute a cross from Hoggarth was headed into Timlin’s hands from Glenn. Beaton then sent in a lovely cross, which went past. A nice movement by Pickering and Thomas was neatly nipped in the bud by Marley making a timely clearance. Taylorville forwards were now very eratic with their shooting, the ball being sent past time and again. The nearest approach to a goal came when Pickering tested Timlin. A foul against Moor followed, and Kitto sent the ball weakly along the ground for Hillhouse to clear. A run by Timlin and Glenn sent into touch. A cornel’ followed, and-Timlin placed well into goal, and Kitto cleared with a hefty punt, and in the next minute at the other end Hoggarth forced a corner from Pattinson, which he put past. Play was in the Rewanui terrtory when half-time came and neither side had scored.

Taylorville opened the second half in brisk fashion, and a good movement was spoiled by Pickering getting offside. A spell of Rewanui- pressure took place, and Taylorville were lucky not to lose a goal. At this time Rewanui forwards forced no less than seven corners in ten minutes, and if they had shot more instead of trying to carry the ball through they would likely have scored. As it was, Taylorville were the first to take the opening when it presented itself. The Taylorville forwards broke away, and Glenn headed the ball against the upright. Timlin was lying on the ground when the ball rebounded to Glenn, who struck the cross-bar with his shot, and the referee awarded a goal. Rewanui were going all out for the equaliser after this, and it whs sheer bad luck which baulked the keen home attack in its next venture. Connors and one 'Of his backs got into a mix-up, and Marley was not slow in propelling the ball goalwards, but the goalkeeper, more by luck than good guidance, managed to smother the effort and clear. The game ran on uninspiringly, each goal being visited in turn, but no further scoring took place, and time came with Taylorville lucky winners by one goal to nil. COBDEN v. GREYMOUTH. Played at Cobden, the home team ran out winners by six goals to two. Scorers: Cobden: McLean 2, Cameron 1, Wilson 1, Jackson 1, Maughan 1. Greymoiuth: Bayley 1, Restieaux 1. DOBSON 4, BLACKBALL 2. Blackball and Dobson met at Blackball on Saturday before a fair attendance of spectators. The ground was in good condition, but both, teams gave one of the worst displays of the season. The teams were: —

Dobson: Mitchell, Watson, Erskine, Hall, Berry, A[. White, W. White, Clasper, King, Short and J. White. Blackball: Snbdden, Cochrane, Lamberton, Jas. Anderson, Smith, MeNicol, Jno. Anderson, Rarity, McGougan, Swinley and Gray. The game opened with Dobson early, in the attack and Clasper placed Dobson in the lead with a good shot. End to end play followed, with neither side dangerous until Blackball were awarded a penalty off Watson, and McGougan evened the scores. Play brightened up after this but half-time came without further score. Early in the second half A. White scored for Dobson, but J. Anderson again evened the scores. The home team kept pressing for some time, but lost many opportunities, and in the last few minutes of the game W. White scored twice in quick succesison for Dobson, giving them a clear-cut victory. Mr C. Hogg was a capable referee.

SCHOOL MATCH. JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP. Cobden met Marist on the Cobden Domain on Saturday afternoon for the

final of the Schools’ Junior Championship. Both teams were evenly matched, each having previously beaten one another.

Marist kicked off but were soon driven back, and Kerr sent the Cobden forwards away. Marist defence was sound, however, and the Mulqueen brothers led several dangerous thrusts into Cobden territory. Cobden backs, however, cleared and Mettrick led a Cobden attack on the right wing. A good centre at the right time gave Rowe a chance and he made no' mistake with his shot. Spurred on by this reverse Marist forwards played hard to equalise. The Cobden defence, with the exception of Kerr, fell away somewhat, and just before halftime S. Mulqueen evened the scores with a clean shot. The second half was sternly fought, the Marist boys combining better than their opponents, and the Cobden backs not being so sure as usual. Good play by Rose led to S. Mulqueen scoring Marists’ second goal, while J. Mulqueen scored a third just before time and Marists ran out winners by three goals to one. A remarkable feature of the match was the fact that the referee was not called upon to award a single penalty, the lads playing the game in a fine spirit and showing a splendid knowledge of the rules. For the winners, Wingham, Rose and the Mulqueen brothers played well, while for Cobden Rowe, Mettrick, Todd and Kerr stood out. Mr S. Hamil made an efficient and impartial referee. At the conclusion of the game, Mi' O. H. Brailsford, President of the W.F.A., in presenting the Cup to the winners, congratulated both teams on their fine display, particularly mentioning the combination of the winners. He advised them to stick to the code and by systematic practice he felt sure they would all go far in the game. TEAMS FOR CANTERBURY.
