GREY MEN'S CHAMPIONSHIPS

McCarthy defeats smith

The finals of the Men’s Championships were played on the Omoto Links between W. McCarthy (holder) and A. K. Smith in the Senior Division, and P. Thorpy and A. Hill in the Junior. The conditions for play were ideal, with a slight breeze from the south east. In the Senior, W. McCarthy retained his title, winning by 5 up and 4 to play.

P. Thorpy was the winner of the Junior Division by 9 up and 8 to play. The following is a brief resume of the Senior match. Ist hole—A. K. Smith won the toss, and pushed his drive out to the right just missing the bunker. McCarthy hooked his and had to play under the trees just being outside the green with his second. Smith’s second was also just short of the green. Smith’s approach was dead and he won the hole 4—5. Smith 1 up. 2. —Both tee shots were short of the green, two indifferent approaches and the hole was halved in 4. 3. —Smith drove a straight ball. McCarthy half topped his but with a long mid-on was pin high to right of green. Smith’s second was slightly pulled and was short of the green. Smith approached dead and won the hole 4 — 5. Smith 2 up. 4. —Smith’s tee shot was pin high to the left of green. McCarthy’s was short, but a good approach landed his ball two feet from the hole. Smith’s second was weak, and being half stymied, he however holed his putt and the hole was halved in 3. Smith 2 up. 5. —Smith’s drive was short, McCarthy just through the green; Smith’s approach was short, also his third. McCarthy won the hole in 4 to 5. Smith 1 up.

7. —Both good drives. Smith’s second and third were only fair. McCarthy’s second played with a brassie was only 30 yards short of green, and with a goods approach and two putts won the hole, 5 to 6. McCarthy 1 up. 8. —This hole was halved in four, McCarthy being lucky, having to play his second from under the trees. 9. —Another half in fives, left McCarthy one up at the turn. 10. —Both good drives and both on in two. Smith putted up dead, McCarthy holed his for a three and won the hole. McCarthy 2 up. 11. —Smith was short with his tee shot and his second out of the bunker was short. McCarthy holed his third and won the hole 3 to 4. McCarthy 3 up. 12. —Two good drives and both on in two. Smith missed the hole with his third and McCarthy holed another three and won 3 to 4. McCarthy 4 up. 13. —Two good drives and both up the bank with their seconds, Smith being just off the green; his approach was weak and his putt went wide. McCarthy went for another three, overran the hole and missed his return the hole being halved in s’s. McCarthy 4 up. 14. McCarthy’s tee shot was on the green. Smith’s short, as also was his approach. He holed his third and halved the hole in 3’s. McCarthy 4 up. 15. —Two long drives. Smith played a nice second just through the green. McCarthy’s was a. bit to the right. Both good approaches. McCarthy missed his fourth and lost the hole. 4 to 5. McCarthy 3 up. 16. —Kent was halved in fives, both seconds being wide of the green. 17. —Hole was well played by both players and was halved in fours. 18. —Smith got' the better drive, McCarthy half-topping his, but his second was pin high just to left of green. Smith fluffed his second and his third was still short. McCarthy won the hole in 4 to Smith’s 5. McCarthy 4 up.

19. —-McCarthy’s a very long drive and good second on the green. Smith’s second was pushed out and his third was heavy and he lost the hole 4 to 5. McCarthy 5 up.

20. —Both players on the green with tee shots. A weak putt lost Smith the hole 3 to 4. McCarthy 6 up. 21. —The Corner was halved in well played fours. 22. —Two good tee shots but another weak putt lost Smith the hole 3 to 4, making McCarthy 7 up. 23. —Smith’s drive was short but straight, McCarthy’s pushed out but his second was on the green as also was Smith’s. Both were dead with their approach putts; a careless putt by McCarthy lost him the hole 4 to 5. McCarthy 6 up.

24. —Rochforts. Two good drives. McCarthy’s second was short; his third was three feet from hole. Smith’s second on edge of green, his third was too heavy and he lost 4 to 5. McCarthy 7 up.

25. —Tipperary. Both players were well down with their seconds. Smith’s third found the green. McCarthy fluffed two approaches, and was one more on to the green. He lost the hole to Smith 5 to 6. McCarthy 6 up. 26. —Hawthorn was halved in fours, both players missing easy putts for threes. McCarthy 6 up.

27. —Camerons was well played to the green. Smith holed his approach for a three and won 3 to 4. McCarthy 5 up. 28. —Burn. Both good drives, McCarthy’s a very long straight . ball. Smith found the green with his second, McCarthy topped his second and was three onto the green. Smith won the hole 4 to 5. McCarthy 4 up. 29. —Crossing. Smith’s tee shot was on the green. McCarthy’s to the left; his approach was heavy. Smith played safe with his approach putt, but McCarthy holed a very difficult putt. The hole was played in threes. McCarthy 4 up.

30. —Outlook. Two beautiful drives. McCarthy’s approach was heavy and found the bunker; he was four onto the green to Smith’s two and lost the hole 4 to 5. McCarthy 3 up. 31. —Terrace. Again both, players made good drives, Smith throwing his chance away not being up with his second and his third again rolled down the bank, being four onto the green. McCarthy holed his third ami won the hole. McCarthy 4 up. 32. —The Bend, was won by McCarthy, in a well played three and Ihe match 5 up and 4 to play.

MEDAL MATCHES

The A grade medal match was won by Doogan, 81 —1'4—67, the three next best cards being Moss 88 —15 —73, Mc-

Carthy 78 —3 —75 and Pratt 95 —20 —75. The B. grade medal match was won by Smythe with 102 —22—80. ANOTHER “RECORD” The outstanding feature of the weekend play was the snappy score of 17 taken by a. member of the “Hole-in-Ono” Club at. the 12th hole.
