N.Z. DEFEAT NEWCASTLE.

SYDNEY, August 10.

In the Rugby League match at Newcastle on Saturday, New Zealand defeated the Newcastle district team by 25 points to 22. The New Zealand team was the same as that which won at Young. About four thousand spectators witnessed the game, which provided a hard tussle. The New Zealanders prevailed for the first half hour, at the end . of which they were leading by 13 points to 2. The’ Newcastle team then came with a great burst, and with two tries, which were converted, they brought their score within one point of that of the New Zealanders at half time. After that there were some great rallies. First one side and then the other was scoring. At one stage Dufty landed a magnificent, goal, and then New Zealand led by 25 to 17. The Newcastle men again attacked strongly, and just before the whistle, a local player, Gibb, crossed the line and Hawke goaled, the final scores being: New Zealand 25 Newcastle 22 N.S.W. DEFEAT QUEENSLAND. BRISBANE, August 10. In the Rugby League Inter-State Test match yesterday. New South Wales defeated Queensland by 15 points to 12. CHRISTCHURCH MATCHES. Pacific 23, Christian Brothers B 8; City 19, Athletic 5. O’DONNELL CUP MATCH. Owing to the weather conditions no senior League games were played yesterday. One junior game was played, at Waiuta, where Waiuta. successfully staved off a challenge for the O’Donnell Cup, defeating Rapahoe by 5 points to 4, a converted try to two penalty goals. No games were played in the lower grades.
