RACING.

FIXTURES.

July 26—South Canterbury H.C. July 31 and August 2—Manawatu R.C. August 12, 14, 16—Canterbury J.C. G.N.

TO-DAY’S RACING..

Starshooter In". Starshooter’s name was omitted from the telegraphed list of acceptors for the Winter Cup. Starshooter is weighted at 9.2.

Staghunter: At the present stage of affairs is likely to start favourite for the Winter Cup.

Barrington: Beat, a moderate lot in the Waimate Hunt Club Cup. He is, however, an improving gelding. Hard Prince:

Bears an improved appearance as a result of his racing at Timaru meeting, and with Heisler now out of the Hadlow Hurdles to-morrow, should be one to be fancied. He will be ridden by D. O’Connor.

Membo: Promises to make good over hurdles. He shaped well for a novice at Waimate, and is engaged in the Hadlow Hurdles to-morrow at South Canterbury. Little Duchess:

Was backed at Waimate, but any chance of winning was wrecked by getting badly away at the start. She is engaged at the South Canterbury Hunt meeting to-morrow.

Scion: Appears to have outlived his usefulness on the turf, but he is engaged in the Teschemakcr Memorial Hunt Cup to-morrow. Kalakaua:

By winning in his first two attempts over steeplechase country, has done well, and more is likely to be heard of him in the future.

H. Gray: Will ride at the South Canterbury Hunt meeting to-morrow. One of his mounts will be Town Major. Gold Mint:

Will have his first race over sticks to-morrow, and as he has been showing improvement in his recent schooling efforts it will be interesting to hear how he shapes. Habit:

Is galloping well in private. She is to contest the Winter Cup, and will he a very fit mare by next month. At her best she will run out a smart eight furlongs.

Shortly: Appears to be coming right now, and good races are- expected from him at the Manawatu meeting.

South Canterbury Hunt: The annual meeting of the South Canterbury Hunt Club will be held at Timaru to-morrow, and of the horses engaged the following are likely to be prominent: — Hadlow Hurdles: Hard Prince and Membo. Hunters’ Steeplechase: Marco Polo and Tractarian. South Canterbury Steeplechase: Valves and French Fleet. Levels Hack: Little Duchess and Rapina. Washdyke Trot (saddle): Danny Boy and Otaio Rose. Teschemaker Hunt Cup: Ngahue and Barrington. Hunters’ Plate: West Dome and Bonatic. Claremont Handicap: Town Major and Topere.

RICCARTON NOTES.

[SPECIAL TO “STAB.”]

CHRISTCHURCH, July 24

At Riccarton this morning, Wharncliffo and Lord Ranald were schooled together over two rounds of the steeplechase course. At each obstacle the latter outjumped his companion and appeared to have his measure all through. When Wharncliffe pulled up, Lord Ranald went on for an extra round, and gave one of the best exhibitions of jumping witnessed at Riccarton for years. Though apparently outpaced, Wharncliffe jumped well all through, especially for a novice. T. Lloyd left for Sydney this evening with Gay Crest, Adephi and the two-year-old Royal Baby. When being schooled at Riccarton on Wednesday morning the well-known hurdler Heisler fell at the second jump. He was with difficulty got away from the course, and was so badly injured in the back as to necessitate his destruction. E. Shaw, the rider, was [rendered unconscious, but was soon all right again. All further attempts to train Zeuxis have been abandoned for the present. In fact, it is doubtful if he will ever race again.

Radiate is still under suspicion of unsoundness, the trouble being in the knee that he injured at Trenthanr. So far his tasks have consisted of easy work on the plough, and he can hardly l)e at his best for Grand National engagements on such a preparation. As Phastar gave little indication of ever being able to stand another preparation, it was decided to destroy him. R. W. King will have charge of the balance of T. Lloyd’s horses during the absence of the latter in Australia. F. D. Jones left for Sydney to-day with Limerick, Arikiwai, Dunraven, Paquito, First Sight, and Craigavon, all of whom are in the best of order. Limerick has got through a satisfactory preparation, and so far has shown no recurrence of the trouble that led to his retirement last spring. First Sight has improved a lot since last racing, and lias already been supported for the Epsom Handicap. Unfortuantely is none too reliable at the barrier.

Judging by the nature of his latest tasks it would look as if Gala, Day will in future be kept to hurdle racing, for in his efforts as a steeplechaser he turned out. to bo an arrant failure.

The annual meeting of the Inangahua Trotting Club was held at Reefton, in the Band Room, on Thursday evening. Mr. G. G. Lockington, Piesi dent, occupied the chair. The annual report and statement of accounts as presented were taken as read. , The President remarked on tne bad weather which occurred at the annual meeting, but results showed that the date selected was certainly a good one, the investing public patronising the Club well. He regretted the loss of the services of the secretary, Mr. Jno. Banks, who had been untiring in his efforts on the Club’s behalf, both officially and in his own time. Mr. Banks had left the district, but he was sorry to announce that Mr. Banks’ health had broken down, and the President voiced the Club’s wishes for Mr. Banks’ speedy recovery to health. The President referred to the death of Mr. AV. Dunne, the meeting standing in silence as a tribute to his memory. Mr Richard Molloy was made a life member of the Club. Mr. Molloy duly returned thanks for the honour conferred. The name of the Club was changed from “Inangahua Trotting Club” to “Reefton Trotting Club.”

The election of officers resulted in the whole of last year’s office-bearers being re-elected. Dr. L. J. Wicken suggested.that the Committee meet the Reefton Jockey Club for the purpose of discussing an arrangement for the use of the latter club’s course.

The President considered it was a matter that should first be discussed at the Reefton Jockey Club’s annual meeting. Mr C. J. Willis was appointed secretary, and Mr. D. Twomey treasurer. The next meeting was fixed for Wed-, nesday, August 13. The balance sheet as at June 30, 1930, showed excess liabilities over assets of £l3 3/3.

The annual report mentioned that the financial membership of the Club has reduced considerably, now being onlys 50. The decrease of membership is mainly due to the Committee expunging the names of members who have been unfinancial for nearly two years. In accordance with Rule 13, the following members retain their seats on the Committee:— Mesters N. Collins, D. Mines, T. Galbraith, Dr. J. L. 'Wicken and H. T. Crumpton.

During the year under review the Lease between the Club and Trustees of the Reefton Racecourse expired, and, in accordance with the terms therein, application for a renewal for a further period of ten years, as provided in the lease was made. This the Reefton Jockey Club refused to grant.
