REEFTON, July 24

The monthly meeting of the Inangahua County Council was held yesterday. Present: Mr. W. Clayton (Chairman), Crs. Auld, Panckhurst, Watson,] Blackadder, O’Regan, and Archer. R Ronchi applied for permission to carry on the trade of a butcher in premises situated in Lower Broadway. Granted. „ 1 , The County Solicitor forwarded opinion on matter of kerbside petrol pumps.—Received and persons with licensed pumps be asked to take out indemnity insuring against loss. Murray Creek Gold Mines Ltd., asked that the Minister of Mines allow time for payment of rent on the Company’s properties.— Request agreed to and period now extended to January 1, 1931. . L TT . . The Chairman No. 12 District Highways Council, wrote re Larry’s Creek Road deviation, and the elimination of level crossing at Tawhai, that both maters are being referred to the Railway Department. With regard to proposed straightening of i'oad at Cronadun school, the Board does not consider this to be an urgent matter and is unable to make funds available tor Mines Department wrote re Snowy Creek, Hukawai Road and £1 for £1 grant of £5O.— Engineer be authorised to submit proposals for expenditure mentioned. _ A. D. Williams wrote asking for repairs to road leading to Waitahu Mine. —Engineer to report. _ R. Waghorn wrote asking for two additional, crates for protection works at Landing Creek.— Applicant to be supplied with two nets for mates. Reefton Progress League wrote re main Grey Road-Devil’s Creek, asking that another mile of road be constructed to connect with Progress Road. Engineer to inspect and report at next meeting. . . Several residents of Marina Springs and district petitioned asking that telephonic communication be established between Reefton and Maruia Springs. Several settlers at Maruia asked that representations be made to secux e additional money for the erection of Mair’s bridge.—Copy of letter to be sent to District Engineer, 1 üblic Works Department. ' Mrs. Osbourne requested permission to connect cottage premises on Crampton Road with town water supply. Permission granted, rental Cd pei week. A telegram was received from W. J. Morris, recommending application to Mines Department to sink two dips on flat in Burke’s Creek area to inove coal —To be referred to Inspector of Mines, and if recommended, Council to co-operate. Boatman’s Consolidated Coy. (in liquidation), wrote asking for Council to recommend a reduction m rent. —Consideration deferred until next meeting. j Tenders were opened for Boatman’s Creek bridge, Capleston. Three weie received. No tenders were accepted and it was decided to call fresh tenders, the County to supply ironbark. The reports of the sexton, traffic inspector and pound-keeper and Engineer were read. Be attention to river erosion on Maruia Road above Watson’s fam, the Engineer is to confer with officers of Public Works Department with regard to this matter. Attention of thq Highways Board is to be called to condition of Maruia Road beyond the 20 mile peg onward, as same is getting into bad condition. The Engineei was instructed to prospect for a foundation for Mair’s Bridge and to draw plans for same. Application is to be made for assistance to construct road to Pakihi, opposite Murray’s at Hinau.

A resolution was passed issuing a demolition order for a building in Dawson Street; same to be removed forthwith.

Resolved that the Engineer be instructed to attend to repairs in Bridge Street, and to road leading to Electric Light Corporation plant. That the Engineer supply Mr A. Cohen with pipes at Black’s Point for drainage of surface water. That the Public Works Department be written to asking that the construction of Boundary Road Maruia be put in hand as soon as possible. That the Engineer be instructed to undertake further "work at Rotokohu for flood protection purposes. That Mr P. Smith at Cronadun be asked to furnish his account with regard to work done on protection works near Fern Flat, Waitahu. That the County Clerk be authorised to attend the Court and uplift money on behalf of the County Council. The report of the special committee was presented in committee.

HOSPITAL BOARD MEETING

REEFTON, July 25

The monthly meeting of the Inangahua Hospital Board was held last evening. Present: Messrs J. B. Auld (Chairman), D. McKime, W. Blackadder, G. B. Mclnroe, F. Seawright, R. T. Watson.

Tho Department' of Health wrote stating that claim for subsidy of £306/6/4 had been sent forward for payment, also that all claims for subsidy on voluntary contributions and bequests are subject to the special approval of the Minister of Finance, also asking to what special purposes voluntary contributions are to be applied.

Dr T. C. Mclntyre, Medical Director, wrote stating he would arrive in Rcefton on Thursday, July 31, and will see tuberculosis patients at Reefton Hospital at 10.30 a.m. The Department of Health forwarded estimates of subsidy payments 1930-31.—Tho Board decided that capital expenditure could not be reduced. Telegrams were read from 11. E. Holland M.P., M. Fagan, M.L.C., G. C. Black M.P., and Department of Health stating that, subsidy to Waiuta. Hospital was being restored. The secretary stated that another £75 had been paid in, and he would make application for subsidy on this as well as back payments. The Chairman moved that votes of thanks bo recorded to the members mentioned and also to the Department of Health for their efforts on behalf of the Board.—Carried. The Waiuta. Medical Association wrote conveying the resolution of the Association: (1) Enlist tho aid of Hon. M. Fagan ; and Messrs Holland ami O’Brien M’s.P. to have subsidy restored; (2) Reduce the staff at the local hospital; (3) Curtail the medical officer's visit to every alternate Sunday; (4) Secure the services of a local car proprietor for conveyance of patients to Rcefton Hospital, which would in many cases eliminate the

necessity of special visits by the doctor; also enclosing £3B/6/6, monthly contribution.

The Chairman said they should adopt some of the suggestions made by the Waiuta Association. Mr Watson thought that Waiuta should be reduced to a dressing station, and any serious cases sent to Reef ton. The secretary read the figures of the cost, of the Waiuta. The Chairman moved that this Board adopt the Waiuta Medical Association’s recommendation of curtailing the visits of the Medical Officer to one a fortnight, and that the doctor be notified of this.—Seconded by Mr Watson and carried.

Matron Hunt, regarding her absence from hospital, wrote pointing out that she was granted leave by the Medical Officer, and that she left her assistant in charge.

Tho Reefton Medical Superintendent reported: Admitted 12, discharged 1.1, remaining 26. Outpatients 1, attendances 14, operations 5, anaesthetics 5, births 5. Dr Wicken and myself have agreed to give lectures to the junior nurses. Both have already given lectures. Each day sees the nurses trained at the bedside and in the operating room, and to give a list of these attendances to the Board would be no easy matter. With strictly academic, lectures given, 1 shall report from month to month. Waiuta: Admitted 3, discharged 3. No. of outpatients 59, attendances 170, visits 3.
