COUNTY COUNCIL MEETNG ’ [our own correspondent.] j REEFTON, June 26. ’ The monthly meeting of the Inangahua County Council was held yesterday. Present: Cr. W. Clayton (chairman), Crs. Auld, Byrne, Blackadder, Archer, Watson, O’Regan. Cr. Pankhurst was granted leave of absence. District Traffic Manager, Railways, wrote regarding a rail omnius between Inangahua and Reefton, that the present traffic did not warrant same. Grey County Council wrote on the matter of Regional Planning and boundaries, stating the Council is of opinion that Maruia. Springs District should be included in Coast areas and would support a motion to that effect. —Recommendation that boundaries or groups Inangahua County be included and Grey County be asked to co-operate. T. W. Bannan applied for renewal of slaughter house No. 43, Blackwater. Granted subject to usual conditions. N. McVicar applied for permission to erect a petrol pump near Mawheraiti Hotel.-—Permission granted subject to Engineer’s inspection and County solicitor be asked for opinion. Mrs. B. A. Wade wrote re water connection at her dwelling, Buller Road. Engineer to attend. W. J. Morris wrote re road at McMahon’s Hill, Larry’s Creek. Engineer to inspect, the Council to apply for a grant of £lOO. The Mines, Department wrote re repairs to Waitahu bridge, offering £36 subsidy for repairs.—Offer accepted. The Reefton Electric Light Co., wrote asking for repairs to road to Power-house. —Left to Engineer. From Public Works Department, forwarding authority for Reefton-Maruia Road.—Received. From T. Phillips re his services as County Solicitor. . l x TT . k From Chairman No. 12 District Highways Council re Maintenance of Reef-ton-Maruia Road. The matter of O’Flaherty s contract was deferred and the Public Works Department is to be asked to consent to payment of grant for a light tiaffic bridge. It is decided to offer Mr. W. J. Morris, the use of road line for tramway should he need same. It was agreed that in the event of the. Council requiring legal advice, Mr Phillips be consulted, and all such communications be sent through the County Clerk. Reports of Poundkeeper, Traffic inspector and Inspector of Nuisances, Sexton, and County Engineer were received. The Engineer to attend to the repairs to Watts Road, Waitahu. Resolved that the names of two pioneers buried at Fern Flat be obtained and placed on railings round the graves. That the Council protest against the removal of the Public Trust Office from Reefton to Greymouth, and that representations be • made to the Public Trustee regarding • same, and wires to be sent to the ■ Members for Buller, Motueka and the ■ Prime Minister, Minister in charge of the Public Trust Department, Hon. s Mr Fagan and Hon. W. Mclntyre. That ■ a section of Broadway be repaired and , converted into a bitumen-sealed road, , and the Engineer be instructed to attend to same when conditions permitted. The Engineer to report on s road erosion above Watson’s farm, • Maruia Road. Inspector of Mines be , interviewed regarding repairs or grant , /same on Hukuwai Road. The En- , gineer to ascertain who deposits rubbish near the Bank of New Zealand. That Mr G. C. Black, M.P., be asked to expedite expenditure for grant on Boatman’s Creek bridge, and that the price of water to Mr T .Phillips’s prei mises, Upper Broadway, be 6d per . week.

It was resolved that the rates, both general and mining, be, ( 51d in the pound, and the fire rate be ad in the pound for the ensuing year.

HOSPITAL BOARD MEETING. [OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] REEFTON, June 27. The monthly meeting of the Inangahua Hospital Board was held last evening. Present: Messrs F. Seawright, J. O. Byrne, T. R. Watson, W. Blackadder, J. B. Auld, D. McKane, J. O’Regan, G. B. Mclnroe. • The secretary, Mr C. Nevin, stated that the first business was the election of chairman, and called for nominations.

Mr Byrne proposed Mr J. B. Auld, and Mr T. R. Watson seconded. Mr McKane proposed Mr W. Blackadder. The latter, however, declined nomination.

Mr Auld was declared duly elected and took the chair.

The North Canterbury Hospital Board forwarded a copy of Dr McIntyre’s report on his visit to the various Boards connected with the North Canterbury Tuberculosis group. Mr McKane moved'that if the Board had a nurse available she be sent to the Sanatorium at Christchurch for the necessary time (about three weeks) to obtain the training.—Seconded by Mr Mclnroe and 'carried. The Waiuta Medical Association enclosed monthly contribution £37/10/-, also stating that the Matron was absent from Hospital on April 14. Mr Blackadder moved that the Matron be asked for an explanation regarding her absence on that date. Seconded by Mr O’Regan and carried. The Department of Health wrote that the special subsidy on contributions from Waiuta Medical Association would be cancelled for the current year. Mr Seawright moved that the Director-General be written to and a protest entered against the proposed cancelling of subsidy. Mr McKane seconded. The Chairman pointed "out that the receipts for the past month was £39/1/6, and the expenditure £llO/11/9, and the cost for a year without the subsidy was £797, while Waiuta patients also owed £67/10/for attendance at Reeftori Hospital. Members generally were of opinion that the doctor was called to Waiuta to attend cases which the • Matron could deal with. The motion was put and carried.

Mr Watson moved that the Waiuta Medical Association be notified that the Government having withdrawn their subsidy, the Association be notified that they must make up the deficiency or curtail expenditure. Seconded by Mr Mclnroe... The Chairman said that the subsidy had been cut off since the beginning of April. Mr Byrne moved that the Waiuta Medical Association be asked to attend at the Board’s next meeting. This was not seconded. K. Carmody wrote resigning her position as probationer at Reefton Hospital. J. Williams wrote accepting the of-

Mr O’Regan moved that the Matron | Waiuta Hospital, be informed that Mr Ronchi is the Hospital butcher, and that she be asked to get supplies from him. Seconded by Mr Mclnroe and carried. - The Medical Superintendent, Reelton, reported: Admitted 9, discharged 9, remaining in hospital 25; outpatients 1, attendances on out-patients 15, operations 2, anaesthetics 2, births °‘ The Matron, Waiuta Nurses’ HoAre reported: —Admitted 2, discharged 1, no. of outpatients 72, no. of attendances 191, visits 6. Matron Gibson, Reef ton Hospital, reported.— Sister Hay-McKenzie commenced duty on June 8. Sister Quealy on June 13. Mrs Rcinisny letumed from annual holiday on June 24. I request the Board to purchase a chesterfield couch and a small china cabinet, also to grant me one weeks leave of absence. Mr Mclnroe moved that the Matron’s request for articles for her room, also her request for a holiday be granted. Mr Blackadder seconded. —Carried. Mr Byrne moved that the Chairman be paid £5O per year. He considered the position deserved payment more so than that of a County Chairman. Mr Auld thanked Mr Byrne for his consideration, but he could not entertain such a proposal. The stringent position of the Board also precluded his considering the motion.
