ILLEGAL TRADING
N.Z. ALLIANCE'S DEMAND
[PEB PBESS ASSOCIATION.]
WELLINGTON, June 17
A deputation from the New Zealand Alliance waited on the Minister of Justice to-day, asking for immediate drastic action to put down lawbreaking by licensed liquor sellers. It was stated that, if the police were not ignorant of the offences they were guilty of a grave dereliction of duty. If they were impotent, then it was the duty of the Government to give them the power. Commissioner Mcllveney said the police investigated all cases in which there was complaint, and took action in every case that came to their knowledge. He pointed out. that direct evidence was difficult, to get. He would see to the best of his ability that the law was enforced.
The Minister gave an assurance that illegal trading would not be allowed to over-ride the law.
