ENTERTAINMENTS

OPERA HOUSE—TO-NIGHT.

In bringing the delightful musical comedy, “No, No, Nanette” to the talking screen, First National has set a brilliant pace for other Hollywood Studios to follow. This lavish spectacle, made partly in simply gorgeous technicolour, was presented before a large and delighted audience at the Opera House last evening. The special musical scenes, including dazzling trips to Holland, Japan, New York and Mars, are very beautiful. “Nanette” is mirthful, melodious, and produced with an artistry never excelled. “King of the Air,” the big song number, has a swinging virile tune that will live for time to come, it is sung by Alexander Gray, the handsome leading man, who possesses a most beautiful singing and speaking voice. Other songs are: “The Japanese Ballet,” “The Dance of the Wooden Shoes,” “Dancing on Mars,” and “Pretending,” all of the popular tuneful quality. “I Want to be Happy” and “Tea for Two,” hits of the original stage musical comedy, have been kept in the picture, and sound as wbll as ever. Bernice Claire and Gray portray the leading roles. Miss Claire, a new personality from the stage, will be one of the musical talkies favourites hereafter. She has the youth, beauty, sparkle and voice for such roles. The scenes were remarkable and consisted of airplane honeymoon among the stars; trip to Mars and the dance of the Martians; “King of the Air” number with its human airplane; toweling welcome home finale with 200 dancers and a life size 1940-model Zeppelin soaring high above the stage!
