RETROSPECTIVE LAWS

MR MASSEY’S PRECEDENT. [PER press association.] BLENHEIM, June 16. In an interview with a, representative of the “Express” in regard to the Prime Minister’s threat to deal retrospectively with those importers who think of anticipating any increase in the tariff. Hon. R. McCallum pointed out that the precedent for this was wisely laid down by the late MxMassey in connection with the blundei’ of the gift of £lOOO per annum free of death duty.

Mr Massey had public announced that though the Supreme Court had discovered a blunder in the drafting of the Amending Act which allowed a wealthy man to give away any number of thousands in one year free, that was not the intention of the Legislature, and he gave a public warning that he would not hesitate to pass retrospective legislation for getting hack on those attempting to benefit their legatees by giving each £lOOO in any one year.
