Lord and Lady Bledisloe made then first official visit to Palmerston North yesterday, and were accorded a civic welcome. They have a big programme ahead of them for the next few days in visiting the hospital, schools, Massey College, the Show, and Flock House.—Press Assn.

Mrs A. Marshall left this morning for Christchurch.

Messrs G. Schaef and B. Quinn left this morning for Wellington.

The death is announced of M. Lucien Klotz, formerly French Minister of Finance.

Mr and Mrs W.. . Warnock , of Oamaru, are on a visit to Mrs C. Bryan, Kotuku.

Rev. G. Barker, vicar of Ahaura, has decided not to accept the offer made to him to be vicar of Reefton.

Recent arrivals at the Albion Hotel include: Messrs S. Mathews, H. Neich (Wellington), J. Carolin, 11. A. Wood (Christchurch).

Rev. H. M. Cocks, of Mt. Somers, formerly of Kumara, who has recently undergone an operation in St. George’s Hospital, Christchurch, is progressing favourably.

Mr H. Mason left this morning on transfer to the Railway Department, Chustchurch. He was a prominent • Blaketown Club Rugby player, having also represented the West Coast.

Mr and Mrs W. Page left this morning for Wellington, - and will leave on Saturday for Scotland. Misses E. and C. Page accompanied them to Christchurch.

The death took place on Monday, at the residence of his daughter, Mrs J. Firman, of Mr Michael Maloney, of Petone, and formerly of the West Coast. Deceased was 100 years of age, and was an old resident of the Taramakau Settlement, which he left some years ago to take up his residence in Petone. He leaves a son and a daughter, Mrs J. Firman. The funeral will take place at the Karoro Cemetery.

. The death occurred on Saturday, at fiis home in Timaru, of Mr E. R. Guinness, a director of the firm of Pyne, Gould, Guinness, Ltd. He had been ill for some months, and had attained the age of 82 years. Mr Guinness was born in Calcutta on July 6, 1847, and was the second son of the late Mr Frank H. Guinness. He cams to New •Zealand as a small boy with his parents and elder brother (the late Sir Arthur Guinness, at one time Speaker of the House of Representatives).

The death occurred at his residence, Marsden Road, last evening of Mr; James Laing. Born at Linton (Scotland) 93 years ago, he landed in Auckland in 1864, from whence, after following the gold rushes at Dunstan and Gabriel’s 'Gully in Otago, he came to Greymouth in 1866. After following his calling as a grocer iii the mining camps at Charleston along the Coast to Hokitika, he . established a store in Tainui Street where he carried on a grocery business for manj T years. He leaves a widow, five sons and one daughter.
