WESTLAND HOSPITAL BOARD. [OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HOKITIKA, June 17. The monthly meeting of the Westland Hospital' Board was held last evening. Present: Messrs G. Davidson, A. R. Elcock, J. J. Breeze, R. Meharry, W. Jeffries, W. H. Evenden, M. Keenan, H. Wells, T. W. Duff. The Secretary (Mr Bruce) took the chair, and invited applications for the position of chairman for the ensuing two years. Mr W. Jeffries nominated Mr J. JBreeze, and in doing so eulogised Mr Breeze’s work, stating that he lias been ■working on the Board for 4. years. The motion was seconded by Mr Keenan, and supported by Mi’ R. Meharry. Mr Breeze was, therefore, re-elected, and took the chair, amidst the applause of members. He thanked them for their renewed confidence and asked for the same co-operation from the members as he l ad received hitherto. This, he said, would complete the fiftieth year ho ha 1 acted on the Hospital Board. An apology was received for the absence of Mr Tur ier, in Christchurch. Some discussic i ensued on the matter of the closing of a road contiguous to several propc .’ties, including that of the Hospital E jard.—-On the motion of Mr Jeffries, seconded by Mr Keenan, the mat' er was left 'with the Chairman and M. - Davidson to attend to.

Dr Valintine wrote, intimating that all local bodies, including Hospital Boards, must pre seed warily in their expenditure. The Clerk read a report by a subcommittee on the question of erecting shelters, etc., and providing nurses for treatment of T.B. cases at the Westland Hospital.

Mr Jeffries poi ted out the definite request by the (. overnment to incur no capital expenditure this year. He agreed with the suggestion that the Surgeon Superintendent be asked to endeavour to accommodate the T.B. cases at present in the Hospital till the end of the year, when the position can be reviewed.

A letter was received from the Hon. Sir A. T. Ngata 0:1 the question of the payment of maintenance fees by Maori patients, and stating that a representative of the Native Advisory Board would be in this district shortly, when some effort would be made to protect the interests of the Board. The Westland County Council wrote agreeing to the closing of certain roads contiguous to the Hospital Board’s property. It was resolved that a letter of thanks be forwarded to Sir Heaton Rhodes for the gift of numerous bulbs of narcissi.

The President of the Timber Workers’ Union wrote asking the Board to delay action in cancelling agreement. A letter was also received in connection with this matter.

The Clerk pointed out a mis-state-ment made in a Grey paper by Mr Turley, which stated that this Board had only received 29 per'cent of fees before the arrangement, whereas the fees received actually amounted to 62.29 per cent in 1929 and 66.9 in 1928. The Secretary of the same Union wrote, stating that the amount had been paid into the Grey Board, and from tho latter forwarding a cheque Tor £l5O, Hokitika’s quota. s Nurso L. Peters wrote resigning her position and asking for refund of superannuation payments. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr Jeffries for his work in selecting a sterilising plant at Wellington.

Tho Surgeon Superintendent reported as follows: —Remaining in hospital on April 30; admitted during May 61, total treated during the month 92; discharged cured 40, discharged relieved 8. died 2, remaining in hospital on May 31, 42; patients remaining in hospital over two months, v l3.

On tho motion of Mr Duff, it was resolved that applications be invited for the position of wardsman. T f he. matter of the appointment of a night sister was left with the Matron. Accounts amounting to the sum of £284/6/3 were passed for payment. Tho Treasurer reported receipts £1632/13/-, expenditure £833/0/1, credit balance £448/2/1. HOLY TRINITY CHURCH. A parishioners’ social was held in Holy Trinity Hall last evening. The interior of the hall has been recently cleaned and painted; special lighting effects and decorations gave the room a cheerful appearance. Mr Fletcher gave some gramophone musical selections. A competition was arranged, in which all present moved about the

hail and introduced themselves. The winners were Mrs G. Schaef (lady,s prize) and Mr L. Nash (gentleman s prize). A short musical programme comprised a pianoforte duet by Miss •L. Marshall and Miss M. Coburn, songs by Miss B. Adkin, Miss B. Drake (with violin obligato by Miss Coburn), Mr R. Smith and Mr A. Nicholson; a dance by Miss Patti Marshall and a quartette by Mrs. Hopkinson, Miss Coburn, Mr Reg. Smith and Mr Fred Smith. Tho People’s Warden, Mr T. A. Johnston, made a brief statement about the parish funds and the investment of the Building Funds. It was announced that the previous day’s special offertory for the. Renovation Fund was a record, over £3OO was placed in the offertory in church. Since then he had received some £3O and promises of further donations. (Applause). Archdeacon Jermyn introduced Miss Baker, who explained the objects of the Young People’s Union and the Missionary Service League which she represents in New Zealand.
