HALF-CASTE TONGANS

DEPORTATION OPPOSED

[special to “star.”]

AUCKLAND, June 16. Where is the justice which compels two young Tongans against whom New Zealand has nothing, to return to their country where there is nothing for them, after receiving an education which fits them only for a European life? This is the question asked by Mr.'Ralph Sanft of Auckland, in appealing against the law which would compel two half-caste Tongans, whose uncle, he is, to return to the Islands after the lapse of a number of years, during which they have been attending an Auckland school. One of the Tongans is a lad aged 18, who has been a pupil at the Auckland Giammar School, and the other is his sister aged 20, who has also received a New Zealand education. In reply to the appeal of their uncle who has offered the pair a home, the Government has merely stated that the term of their temporary residence has expired. “They are orphans,” said Mr. Sanrt, “and though I offer them a home here I am told they must leave for the Islands where they have no home, and further where they have no chance, of making a home. A Government which allows them to come to New’ Zealand for an education which fits them only for a European life ought to. allow them to remain. There is nothing for them in the Islands. You know what Island life is for half-castes.” Mr. Sanft has been supported in his plea by Mr. W. J. Jordan, M.P. Correspondence has passed between the Prime Minister and Mr. Jordan, but without avail. . The two Tongans, on behalf ol whom the appeal has been made are Miss Christina and Mr. Alfred Sanft. Miss Sanft was admitted to New Zealand for her education in 1921 and her brother three years later.
