UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF

PALMERSTON PROPOSALS. [per press association.] PALMERSTON NORTH, June 13. At a meeting of the Borough Council, to-day, the Mayor (Mr A. J. Graham) brought down a comprehensive scheme to provide unemployment relief work in Palmerston North during the winter months, and received the approval of the Council for his proposals. Under the scheme, £lOOO will be transferred from the Electricity Account, and with the Government £2 for £1 subsidy will make available '£3ooo. This is to be devoted to reading and subdividing a reserve in Fitzherbert Avenue, Which will be 'cut into forty sections, suitable for building purposes. In addition, £350 is to be spent on preparing a children’s playing area in Campbell Street. The reading of the reserve Will be reproductive as each will brin'g in £6 annual rental in addition to rates. The Mayor made it plain that this relief work was for bona fide Palmerston North residents only. DOMINION TOTALS NEW PLYMOUTH, June 13. There were 5067 unemployed in the Dominion for the week ended on June 9, according to the statement issued to-day by the Pion. S. B. Smith, Minister of Labour. Of this number, 2674 registered at labour bureaux and the post offices as being with dependents, 2393 had no dependents. The total shows a decrease of 192 over the figures at the end of the previous week. The details of the registrations in cities are: —

Auckland: —With dependents, 700; without dependents, 593. Wellington:—With dependents, 343; without dependents, 304. Christchurch: — With dependents, 494; without dependents, 421.

Dunedin: —With dependents, 143; without dependents, 124. Invercargill:—With dependents, 67; without dependents, 68. Totals for the five centres, with the figures for the previous week given in parenthesis are: — Auckland 1293 (1380), Wellington 647 (650), Christchurch 915 (911), Dunedin 267 (336), Invercargill 135 (161).
