MUD ERUPTION
POVERTY BAY STARTLED.
[PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.]
GISBORNE, May 7
A sharp report and rumblings suggestive of a nearthquake, startled the Waimata Valley residents yesterday. It. was later found that three or four acres round the mudsprings on Mr Savage’s property were covered to a depth of ten feet with mud. The eruption was through a gas blow-out. It is estimated that nearly a million tons of mud was thrown up by the eruption, overflowing a quarter of a mile down the hillside.
The springs have always interested oil men, as the presence of gas is believed to be associated with the existence of oil.
