CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

[TO THE EDITOR.] Sir, ——In your Saturday’s issue referring to the Power Board Finance, discussed at the Chamber of Commeice, you state, referring to my remarks “Mr. Greenslade said that he spoke in committee, and that Mr. Kitchingham objected”: the inference to be taken from this is that I wished the matter discussed in committee, which is quite erroneous, and I hasten to correct any wrong impression which

has gone out. What I understood I said was, “Is this being taken in Committee?” because I desired the fullest publicity, as the Power Board Jias every reason to be proud of its financial position as will be evidenced when the accountancy takes place on the 31st March. At the previous meeting’of the Chamber of Commerce, it was moved that “the verbal report be received in Committee” but I strenuously objected, as I wished a written report to be incorporated in the minutes, and that it was to be noted in the minutes “that there was no substance in the wild rumours that had been circulated and brought up in committee by a member of the Chamber of Commerce.” I am glad to say that I was successful in getting the necessary words added to the report “that there was no substance in the reports and that (as voiced by Mr.- Kitchingham) they proved to be untruthful and misleading.” Further, in your article headed “News about Harbour,” and further heading, “Board Member’s Protest.”

I did not protest as member of the Harbour Board, but as Mayoi’ of Greymouth; you also omitted to mention that the motion was seconded by Mr. F. Kitchingham, every membei’ being unanimous that it was not in the best interests of the town and district that suclx Press Association messages should be broadcasted. Yours etc., J. W. GREENSLADE.
