MALTESE POLITICS
BITTER ELECTION CAMPAIGN. [BY CABUP. —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] MALTA, March 28. The clerical representatives in the Senate moved a resolution condemning the Government’s conduct as harmful to the spiritual interests of the Maltese people, and as tending to weaken their respect and obedience to the ecclesiastical authorities, and as impairing the authority of the Bishops. Signor Bartolo, replying, asked for a week’s adjournment in order to rebut the charges by official documents that could not be disclosed, he said, without the authority of the Imperial Government. The Senate, however, rejected the move for the adjournment by 10 votes to 4. The Maltese Parliament is now discussing the final stages of the Appropriation Bill, after which a dissolution is expected. The electoral campaign is already in full swing. The Nationalists are sup- ( ported by the majority of the clergy, and they are making the religious question the chief issue. This is producing the most bitter struggle in Maltese history.
