Mr. K. E. Sweetman, left on holiday for Christchurch, this morning.

Mr T. Brown, who last week underwent an operation at the Grey Hospital, i§ making favourable progress. Mr F. Sadler, of the clerical staff of the Railway Department, has received notice of his transfer to Christchurch.

Miss Gladys Sumner has returned to Christchurch, after spending a holiday with her parents, Mr and Mrs B. Sumner, of Paroa.

The death is announced from Wanganui of Mr Thomas W. Copeland, aged 73, a well-known athlete, and volunteer fire brigadesman in the eighties.

Mr Frank Lingard, Aratika, who recently won the Mines Department Scholarship, left on Saturday for the Otago University, where he will continue his studies.

The funeral of the late Mrs Jane Gibbens, of Preston Road, took place this afternoon at Karoro Cemetery. The Rev. T. N. Cuttie conducted the service.

Members of the staff of C. Smith’s met on Saturday to make a presentation to Miss Iris Boddy, who after six years’ service, is leaving to be married. The staff’s gift was an xylonite set and that ,of the firm, a travelling rug. Mr R. B. Smith made the presentation and Mr Heffernan responded for Miss Boddy.

During the afternoon tea interval at the Married v. Single cricket match at the Recreation Ground yesterday, Mr. A. Jamieson, who'recently qualified to play for the former team was presented by Mr. L. F. Casey, on behalf of the cricketers, with a handsome salad bowl. He and Messrs R. Reynolds, Hopkinson and F. H. Denton referred to Mr. Jamieson’s keen interest in the game and united in wishing him and Mrs. Jamieson health and happiness.

The wedding took .place this morning at Holy Trinity Church, of Harriett© Gertrude (“Clem”), only daughter of Mr and Mrs T. E. Coates, of Greymouth, to William Gordon, only son of the late Mr and Mrs W. McKay. Archdeacon J. A. Jermyn was the officiating clergyman. The bride wore a dress of golden brown ring velvet, with a hat of the same colour, and carried a bouquet of autumn flowers. She was attended by Mrs R. Porter, of Wanganui, who wore Indian red crepe-de-chine with felt hat and shoes en suite. Mrs T. E. Coates, mother of the bride, wore nattier blue, with hat to tone, and Mrs Russell, sister of the bridegroom, wore reseda green crepe-de-chine, with felt hat of the same colour. Mr Richardson, of Christchurch, accompanied the bridegroom. After the wedding ceremony Mr and Mrs Coates received their guests at their residence in Alexander Street. Mr and Mrs McKay left later by car, on the honeymoon, Mrs McKay travelling in a beige suit, with felt hat to tone.

The funeral of the late Mrs M. A. Thornton took place at Karoro on Saturday afternoon. The cortege was very lengthy, and numerous floral tributes testified to the esteem in which the deceased iady was held. Rev. Father Holohan, assisted by Rev . Father O’Meeghan, officiated at the graveside. The pallbearers were: —Messrs F. D. Williams, R. Reid, M. J. Fogarty, M. Phillips, J. McCaffrey and C.
