' Edward Campbell was charged at Barraba with feloniously slaying Thomas O’Brien, who was found battered at a camp alongside a river. OFFICIAL’S RECALL CANBERRA,. March 28. The Minister of Markets, Mr. Parker Maloney, to-day explained why Mr. Haynes, whd' was the Australian commercial representative in Canada, was recalled, and subsequently resigned. The Minister said: “Mr. S. McKay, of the Sunshine Harvester Works, decried Australia in Canada, and helped to damage our credit and good name abroad. It was expected that Mr. Haynes would have protected Australia "against such damaging statements made by Mr. McKay, but he associated himself with Mr. McKay’s remarks, and repeated them at a public function in Canada.” , ADELAIDE, March 29. S. V. McKay, commenting on Haynes’s resignation and the Minister s statement concerning it, says: “It will shock the public to learn that the only reason for Haynes’s recall was he > honestly stated facts about Australia s present industrial difficulties.”
FEDERAL PARLIAMENT. CANBERRA, March 29. The Senate passed the Bill abolishing the development of the migration commission. Sir G. Pearce eulogised the work done by the commission, which he declared was a safeguard very necessary to the country. Continuing the House debate on the referendum bill, Mr Hughes supported the Government’s appeal for wider powers, but attacked the proposal to empower Parliament to alter the constitution at will. A bill was introduced for the payment of a bounty on cotton seed, lint and yarn. The Acting Minister of Customs expressed t*he opinion that the industry would be able to stand unaided six years hence. The bill to establish a central reserve bank, the objects of which include further assistance to primary and secondary industries, is being introduced on Tuesday.
