COAST EXPRESSES

A MONDAY INSTITUTION. [per press association.] CHRISTCHURCH, March 27. An intimation that the Railway Department has under serious consideration the question of running an express train between Christchurch and the ‘West Coast on Mondays throughout the year in place of the existing slower train, was given to the Railways and Transport Committee of the Canterbury Progress League yesterday by Mr. F. Pawson, Railway Business Agent for Canterbury. The question arose as a result of a suggestion that a daily express service should be run from the Christmas holidays until Easter in order to meet the convenience of tourists desiring to visit the West Coast. Mr. Pawson said that, if it was found possible to put on an express train on Mondays, that would give an express service on four days a week throughout the year. In regard to train running, it had to be taken into consideration that the railways had to be managed as a business concern. The Department had to look closely into the cost of improvements to the service before deciding upon them, and he did not think there was any likelihood of an express train being run on every day of the week. There was, however, every likelihood of getting an express train Mondays. The committee decided to forward a letter to Mr. Pawson supporting his recommendation to the Department that an express train should be run on Mondays.
