LOST FOR HOURS

TRACED BY A GROAN. The mysterious disappearance of a porter of the Bachelors’ Club, Hamilton Place, London, while working with two of his colleagues on the roof, wrts explained by a dramatic discovery late the same night. The porter, John Trehearne, aged 20,. 'who lives on the premises, was missed by his two comrades in the middle of a conversation in which all three were taking part. His friends instantly looked for him among the chimney stacks and other protuberances on the roof, but being unable to find him concluded that he was playing a joke on them. Several hous later, however, when he had not put in ( an appearance, his comrades began a search. After twenty minutes’ fruitless investigation their attention was attracted by a groan. They traced the groan to a disused chimney stack, and looking' down it found that their colleague had fallen many feet to the bottom. There was no way to bring him to the roof again. But after a time, by means of letting down an electric cable and entwining it round his body they brought him to the surface covered unrecognisably in soot and suffering from severe injuries.
