(Per Press Association.) , LICENSEE FINED. WELLINGTON, December 6. P. H. Hayward, licensee of the Foresters’ Arms Hotel, was fined £5 on a charge of selling of liquor after hours, and £2 for assisting and abetting in an offence.

SALUTARY SENTENCE. DUNEDIN, December 6. At the Police Court, James Ernest Gullen, 23, married, charged, with indecent exposure on the Town Belt, was sentenced to three years’ reformative detention. GIFT TO SCHOOL. CHRISTCHURCH, December 5. A donation of £5OO has been given to the Rangiora High School by Mr T. Chapman, a retired farmer, of Christchurch, towards a fund for the development of agricultural education, of which the school makes a special feature.

BODY FOUND ON BEACH. WANGANUI, December 4. Mrs Jessie Partington, aged 53, wife of a gaol warder at Wanganui, was missed from her home early this morning. Her body was found washed ashore at Castlecliff this afternoon. It is believed that she jumped into the river near the town bridge, the tide carrying the body to sea, a distance of five or six miles.

WAIKATO DIOCESE. HAMILTON, December 6.

Supreme Court proceedings between Dean Barnett and Bishop Cherrington ended this morning, the interim injunction against the Bishop’s proposed inquiry into the Dean’s fitness to hold his present office being disclosed by Justice Herdman on the application of both parties. The withdrawal of the case follows an agreement to refer the dispute to a committee appointed by Archbishop Averill. MAORI CONVICTED. CARTERTON, December 6. In the Carterton Police Court this morning, before Justices of the Peace, a full-blooded Maori, Tau Kuriki Kopu, aged 27, commonly known as “Krooki” was charged with assaulting a young Maori girl aged 10, with intent to commit a crime. Evidence was given by the girl, her mother, sister and brother. The girl’s mother is also a sister of Krooki.

The Justices stated that they took a very serious view of the case and sentenced accused to six months’ hard labour. RABBITER KILLED. CHRISTCHURCH, December 5. At Kaikoura this evening the body of Harry Hilmore Cower, aged 48, married, retired farmer, was found in the lupins near the beach with the top of his head blown off. He left home at three o’clock to shoot rabbits. At seven o’clock his wife was alarmed because he did not return, and she asked friends to search for him. The body was found near a barbed wire fence, and a double-barrelled gun with one barrel discharged, was found standing upright against the fence. MISSING BANKRUPT. WELLINGTON, December 5. The creditors in the bankrupt estate of John Albert Bitters, builder, of Lower Hutt, decided that the Official Assignee should endeavour to have Bitters brought back to New Zealand, and that if there are not sufficient funds in the estate to provide a guarantee, the creditors to sign a bond pro rata. As the result of inquiries made by a legal firm,- it was stated that the assets available would probably be £479/13/6 and it was asserted that if Bitters came back a further £9OO might be available. The amount owing to creditors was given as £2039/13/2. The bankrupt’s wife was represented by counsel at the meeting. BLASTING MISHAP. CHRISTCHURCH, December 5. A blasting accident occurred on the Summit Road works this afternoon. A plug of gelignite exploded prematurely, and H. Ydatman, married, and a well-known athlete, was seriously injured. He was the head man of the co-operative gang of men employed by the Government on relief work, and was experienced in the use of explosives. . Apparently he used a short length of fuse, which fired while he was pumping the charge and the fuse into the hole. The charge fired, and drove the tamping rod through his forearm, also injuring his face. There have been two previous fatal blasting accidents within recent months on the Summit Road works.
