LABOUR “BALLOT BOX”
HEAVY DAMAGES AWARDED. (By Cable—Press Assn. —Copyright.) (Received December 6, 8 a.m.) SYYDNEY, December 5. Five actions for defamation, arising out of the notorious “faked ballot box” incident, at the Labour Headquarters, Sydney, some years ago, concluded here to-day. The plaintiff, John Bailey, president of the Australian Workers’ Union, claimed £5OOO damages respectively from .A. C. Willis M.L.C., George Smith, J. O’Reilly, J. Howie, and Dan Rees, former member of the Australian Labour Party executive, alleging the defendants had, as executive officers, prepared and read a defamatory report before the Australian Labour Party Conference in 1922, describing Bailey as a political leader and impugning his conduct at an election of officers about that time. The jury to-day, found in favour of Bailey, and awarded damages as fol lows: Against Willis £2750, Howie, Smith and Rees £5OO each, and O’Reilly, £250.
